SUMMARY:PUFFS: or Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic
DESCRIPTION:The VTSU Castleton Theatre Arts Program presents PUFFS: or Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic. For seven years a certain boy wizard went to a certain Wizard School and conquered evil. This\, however\, is not his story. This is the story of the Puffs… who just happened to be there too. A tale for anyone who has never been destined to save the world.  \n\n\n\nThis clever and inventive play never goes more than a minute without a laugh\, giving you a new look at a familiar adventure from the perspective of three potential heroes just trying to make it through a magic school that proves to be very dangerous for children. Alongside them are the Puffs\, a group of well-meaning\, loyal outsiders with a thing for badgers “who are so lovable and relatable\, you’ll leave the theater wishing they were in the stories all along” (Hollywood Life). Their hilariously heartfelt and epic journey takes the classic story to new places and reimagines what a boy wizard hero can be.  \n\n\n\nPUFFS is not authorized\, sanctioned\, licensed or endorsed by J.K Rowling\, Warner Bros. or any person or company associated with the Harry Potter books\, films or play.  \n\n\n\nHow to get tickets/sign up:   \n\n\n\nAdvanced signup is not required for Soundings students. This event is open to the public. Adult tickets are $10. Tickets for students\, faculty\, staff\, alumni\, and seniors are $5.

SUMMARY:Extreme Survival: Lessons from Those Who Triumphed Against All Odds
DESCRIPTION:We have all heard amazing stories of survival that rendered us awestruck. But too often\, we don’t realize the wealth of information we can learn from people who make it to the other side of life’s most daunting challenges. In this lecture\, New York Times bestselling author Michael J. Tougias chronicles harrowing survival stories and then discusses lessons to learn from these experiences.  \n\n\n\nFor his book Extreme Survival\, Tougias interviewed over 100 people who survived against all odds and researched many historical figures who have achieved the near-impossible. In this talk\, Tougias uses slides from several survival events to give the audience an edge-of-your-seat experience that also provides useful techniques that we can all use when faced with adversity or aspire to achieve a difficult goal.  \n\n\n\nHow to get tickets/sign up:   \n\n\n\nAdvanced signup is REQUIRED for Soundings students\, as seating is limited. SUMMARY:The Power of Landscape
DESCRIPTION:Now that Vermont is reviewing Act 250—legislation that has done so much to create a unique rural landscape in our state—it’s worth asking what we value in landscape in the first place. Why are inhospitable mountains beautiful? What’s actually attractive about a ruined barn?  \n\n\n\nNew York Times Bestselling author M. T. Anderson considers the politics of beautiful scenery and the hidden national longings behind our sense of landscape. He’ll look at the history of our attitudes toward landscape\, traditional New England landscape painting\, and the work of some contemporary Vermont artists to discuss how different societies have found the sublime in their surroundings—and what that might mean for us in the future.  \n\n\n\nHow to get tickets/sign up:   \n\n\n\nAdvanced signup is REQUIRED for Soundings students\, as seating is limited. The signup link can be found on the Soundings Canvas Page or at the link below.   \n\n\n\nThis event is free and open to the public. SUMMARY:Dreamcatcher: Stories of Wisdom from Native America
DESCRIPTION:“Dreamcatcher” is a collection of works dealing with Native America\, and the Native American perspective. These visions are brought to life by artist Leland Faulkner using the tools of theater\, mime\, spoken word\, and visual magic.  \n\n\n\nIn the Chippewa/Anishanabe language\, Leland’s name is Wabuzouns\, Little Rabbit. In his “Dreamcatcher” program\, those who listen and watch will travel through time and imagination with traditional tales from Native America.  \n\n\n\nIn this unprecedented time it is good to remember that stories are a way we can communicate our humanity and our history to future generations. Stories are also how previous generations have transmitted their wisdom\, humor\, and genius to us. Stories Dreams. Poetry. Wonder. Stories are wished into existence by the human unconscious. We human beings love these tales of other places and other times because they teach us so much about our own time and place.  \n\n\n\nIf you want to walk the path leading to the world of story\, follow Leland Little Rabbit.  \n\n\n\nHow to get tickets/sign up: \n\n\n\nAdvanced signup is not required for Soundings students. This event is open to the public. Tickets are free for students\, faculty\, staff\, and alumni. Adult tickets are $10 and senior tickets are $5.

SUMMARY:The Flying Words Project
DESCRIPTION:The Flying Words Project is at once imaginative\, experimental\, and intense! Deaf American Sign Language poet Peter Cook presents three-dimensional imagery while collaborator Kenny Lerner’s spoken words allow the hearing in the audience to literally see the ASL image and become lost in the movement. Together they have created a moving tapestry uniquely accessible to both hearing and deaf audiences since 1984.  \n\n\n\nThe goal of Flying Words is probably the same as all other poets\, to play with language.  As luck would have it\, ASL is a language of moving pictures. So\, Kenny and Peter juxtapose imagery you can see in creating their work. The pieces are first written in ASL. When a poem is completed\, Peter and Kenny try to figure out how the hell to voice it!  In other words\, how to express just enough words and sounds so that hearing members in the audience can see the images for themselves.  Together they create a moving tapestry uniquely accessible to both hearing and deaf audiences.  \n\n\n\nHow to get tickets/sign up:  \n\n\n\nAdvanced signup is not required for Soundings students. This event is open to the public. Tickets are free for students\, faculty\, staff\, and alumni. Adult tickets are $10 and senior tickets are $5.

SUMMARY:Cantrip
DESCRIPTION:Join musical quartet Cantrip for a night of spellbinding entertainment. The name Cantrip is an Old Scots word meaning a charm\, magic spell or piece of mischief and it aptly describes the unexpected twists and turns in their musical arrangements\, likewise the compelling potency of their musicianship.  \n\n\n\nSwirling border pipes\, raging fiddle\, thunderous guitar and three rich voices blend to create a sound energetic enough to tear the roof off. Echoes can be heard of trad music from the 1960s and 70s\, but the years have slowly infested their music with the sounds of funk\, metal\, bluegrass\, swing\, and even klezmer.   \n\n\n\nHow to get tickets/sign up:  \n\n\n\nAdvanced signup is not required for Soundings students. SUMMARY:American Coup: Wilmington 1898 Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:American Coup: Wilmington 1898 tells the little-known story of a deadly race massacre and carefully orchestrated insurrection in North Carolina’s largest city in 1898 — the only coup d’état in the history of the US. Stoking fears of “Negro Rule\,” self-described white supremacists used intimidation and violence to destroy Black political and economic power and overthrow Wilmington’s democratically-elected\, multi-racial government. Black residents were murdered and thousands were banished. The story of what happened in Wilmington was suppressed for decades until descendants and scholars began to investigate. Today\, many of those descendants — Black and white — seek the truth about this intentionally buried history.  \n\n\n\nHow to get tickets/sign up:   \n\n\n\nAdvanced signup is REQUIRED for Soundings students\, as seating is limited. SUMMARY:Comfort Girl
DESCRIPTION:“Comfort Girl” is a song cycle that explores the lives of Chinese ‘comfort women\, ‘ a cruel euphemism for the women who were abducted into sexual slavery by the Japanese army during WWII. The work is a tribute to these young women’s incandescent courage and indomitable spirit\, not only while in captivity during the War but also—in a cruel irony—when they returned home to their families\, who didn’t always welcome them back with open arms.  \n\n\n\nThis piece is performed by artist Stephanie Chou\, who presented two masterclasses for the Soundings program in the fall of 2024  \n\n\n\nSignup not required for soundings students.
