SUMMARY:Tuvergen
DESCRIPTION:“A Mongol without a horse is like a bird without wings.” That proverb comes close to articulating the importance of horses in Mongolia\, whose people are outnumbered by its horses. Were it not for horses\, Mongolian/American folk-fusion trio Tuvergen Band (“galloping” in Mongolian) may not exist\, either. Tamir Hargana (lead vocals\, folk lutes\, morin khuur)\, Naizal Hargana (morin khuur\, vocals)\, and Brent Roman (percussion\, didgeridoo\, vocals) first met in Lexington\, where Tamir and Naizal moved in part because of the horse culture surrounding the Kentucky Derby. Years later\, the three musicians reunited in Chicago\, where they are now based\, to play what they call “modern nomadic music”—an exhilarating sound indebted to Mongolian and Tuvan traditions but inflected with bluegrass sensibilities\, blues instrumental flourishes\, hard-driving rock rhythms\, and more. \n\n\n\nTickets: $25 general admission\, $10 county ID\, FREE for VTSU community\, families with children\, and students of all ages.

SUMMARY:Cantrip
DESCRIPTION:The name Cantrip is an Old Scots word meaning a charm\, magic spell or piece of mischief and it aptly describes the unexpected twists and turns in their musical arrangements\, likewise the compelling potency of their musicianship. Swirling border pipes\, raging fiddle\, thunderous guitar and three rich voices blend to create a sound energetic enough to tear the roof off. \n\n\n\nEchoes can be heard of trad music from the 1960s and 70s\, but the years have slowly infested their music with the sounds of funk\, metal\, bluegrass\, swing\, and even klezmer. Cantrip sprung from a local session in Edinburgh nearly twenty years ago. Their driving music immediately caught the attention of the masses\, and they were quickly signed to the Foot Stompin’ label. With their first album “Silver” (2001) in hand\, Cantrip made its way across the water to the United States\, where they were received with roars and shouts (of enjoyment). After years of significant touring\, the band parted ways with Foot Stompin’ and began producing albums on their own. Two albums later (“Boneshaker” in 2005 and “Piping the Fish” in 2008)\, Cantrip had cemented itself as a perennial figure. \n\n\n\nAfter a period of hiatus in which children were born and continents were left for new ones\, Cantrip redefined its sound. The band tightened its arrangements while expanding its influence. New inspirations began creeping into the sound\, complementing the traditional foundation of the band. This more mature sound debuted on “The Crossing” (2016)\, to high acclaim. In 2019\, the band gathered 50 of its closest friends and fans and returned to its roots\, re-recording Silver in a live format (Cantrip Live)\, re-arranged yet with a more youthful sound than the original. \n\n\n\nThe process inspired a new approach for the band\, which they implemented for their fifth studio album “Undark”. In late 2019\, they spent a week in their original home of Edinburgh creating and recording new music. All of the tracks on this album were captured live in one take by engineer and longtime friend of the band Reuben Taylor. This seminal album shows a new\, darker side of the group while preserving the elements that audiences have come to know and love. After 20 years of touring\, Cantrip has found a character like no other. Dan Houghton\, Jon Bews\, Alasdair White and Eric McDonald stir the elements in a witches’ cauldron\, slowly coalescing into chaotic order.

SUMMARY:BALA-BILA
DESCRIPTION:The BALA-BILA production with Balla Kouyaté from the West African country of Mali and Matchume Zango from the Southeastern African country of Mozambique is historic because we believe that this is the first time that balafon and the timbila have ever been played together. \n\n\n\nThe elaborate orchestral style of playing complex musical arrangements on timbila has set it apart from other xylophone musical traditions elsewhere in Africa. Orchestras commonly consist of between five and thirty timbila of varying sizes and ranges of pitch\, as well as a group of two to twelve male and female dancers performing in front of the orchestra. The accompanying music lyrics are regarded as an important form of social commentary on relevant issues of the day. Each orchestra has a different tuning and a slightly varying scale depending on where the orchestra comes from within the Chopi territory. The importance of this cultural tradition has been acknowledged in the decision by UNESCO to recognize the timbila as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2005. One of the aims of awarding this title is to protect and nurture the tradition and encourage its transmission to future generations. \n\n\n\nPlayed with mallets\, the balafon is made up of wooden slats and rows of calabash gourds\, which serve as natural amplifiers. The original musical instrument\, known as the “Sosso-Bala\,” survives in Kouyaté’s father’s home village of Niagassola\, on the Mali-Guinea border. In 2001\, the Sosso-Bala was declared an item of intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO and is brought out once a year for ceremonial playing.

SUMMARY:Yacouba Sissoko
DESCRIPTION:Yacouba Sissoko\, is a Master kora player from the djely tradition. He has devoted his musical gift to expand the awareness of West African history and culture\, spread the word of peace and empower his listeners to take charge and realize their imagined futures. His performances have a magical effect on audiences as he skillfully transforms traditional songs and stories that he learned from his forefathers into modern day messages of peace\, love and harmony. His flexible virtuosity\, which enables him to move seamlessly from one musical genre to another\, has attracted the attention an eclectic mix of musicians who have sought him out as a collaborator. \n\n\n\nHe has performed toured and recorded with well-known African musicians\, such as Sidiki Conde (Tokounou)\, Abdoulaye Diabate\, Baaba Maal\, and Kakande\, and with many famous Western musicians\, such as Harry Belafonte\, Paul Simon\, Leroy Jenkins and Leni Stern. Easily transitioning between jazz\, pop\, R&B\, and classical music\, Yacouba can be seen regularly with Regina Carter\, Rachel Brown\, Oran Etkin and Benyoro. In addition to performing as a soloist and a guest kora artist\, Yacouba leads his own band SIYA. \n\n\n\nThe band adeptly harmonizes the ancient practice of musical story telling on the solo kora with the modern fuller harmonies of today’s musical instrumentation. The fundamental principle of the band is to unite people and send a message to its listeners to return to the “source” of community and humanity; SIYA in Bambara means “Source”. The sound of SIYA represents the breakthrough of the past few generations of Western African musicians who have opened up this musical experience to new audiences\, incorporating additional instruments and spanning musical genres.

SUMMARY:Soul Project NOLA
DESCRIPTION:Built upon the funky foundation of New Orleans\, Soul Project NOLA bring their own voices to the mix of Funk\, Blues\, Gospel\, Jazz\, and Groove that the Crescent City continually produces. Bandleader\, guitarist and vocalist Jon Cristian Duque\, protégé of the late great Walter “Wolfman” Washington\, has led the band for over two decades. SUMMARY:PAT Department musical: Nevermore
DESCRIPTION:“A literary rock star in his day\, Poe struggled with tragedy and addiction\, poverty and loss\, yet produced some of the world’s most original\, visionary and enduring literature before dying in unexplained circumstances at the age of 40. At once gorgeous and grotesque\, Nevermore blurs the line between fact and fiction\, exploring the events that shaped Poe’s character and career and giving powerful expression to Poe’s words ‘all that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream.'” ~https://nevermoreshow.com/about-the-show/ \n\n\n\nOur students at VTSU Johnson have been working tirelessly to bring this fabulous rock opera to life on our Dibden stage. Join us in awe as we celebrate the work of Edgar Allan Poe with this wonderful department of performers.

SUMMARY:Helen Gillet
DESCRIPTION:Helen Gillet is a singer-songwriter and surrealist-archeologist exploring synthesized sounds\, texture\, and rhythm using an acoustic cello. For someone with her varied background\, New Orleans\, with its mix of cultures and musics\, seemed like a natural place to call home. She was born in Belgium\, raised in Singapore from the ages of 2 to 11\, and routinely shuttled between the homelands of her Belgian father and American mother. Over the years — working in New Orleans with musicians of all stripes\, from avant-garde jazz and classical to pop and funk — Gillet has developed a singular polyglot style. The core of her work is solo performance with live looping\, layering cello parts and vocal lines. Rhythmic figures emerge with bowed or plucked ostinatos or a variety of rubbing and slapping on the body of the cello\, then enhanced with melodies played or sung in her haunting alto. Her mixed musical vocabulary is commensurate with her disparate travels — French chanson of the 1940s\, Belgian folk tunes sung in Walloon\, a mix of rock and punk from the likes of PJ Harvey and X-Ray Spex\, and her own affecting originals\, like audience favorite “Julien\,” sung in a mix of French and English. Gillet’s solo performance is known for its enigmatic quality as she fabricates each song with innovative use of the cello and true mastery of live looping technology.

SUMMARY:Toussaint St. Negritude
DESCRIPTION:Afrofuturist / Oro-shamanic poet and bass clarinetist Toussaint St. Negritude dually conjures the lyric timbre of both his horm and verse\, creating his own collaborative ceremony of empathic wonders. Black\, queer\, artist\, mountaineer\, and devout congregant of the wilderness\, Toussaint St. Negritude honors his multiplicity of freedoms quite seriously. Perennially informed by the pan-cosmic realms of philosophic discovery and the corresponding spirituality evoked by the surrounding Green Mountains of Vermont\, his works are inherently intoned by both the liberation and the expansion of the African Diaspora.

SUMMARY:Mali Obomsawin
DESCRIPTION:Mali Obomsawin is a bassist\, singer and composer from Odanak First Nation. Her debut album Sweet Tooth (Out of Your Head Records\, 2022) has garnered international acclaim\, named in ‘best of the year’ lists from The Guardian\, NPR\, and JazzTimes upon its release. Evocative and thunderous\, Sweet Tooth delivers a gripping and dynamic performance\, seamlessly melding chorale-like spirituals\, folk melodies\, and post-Albert Ayler free jazz. Obomsawin’s ensemble occupies a musical universe completely their own\, bringing skronk and reverence to every stage. \n\n\n\n“Telling Indigenous stories through the language of jazz is not a new phenomenon\,” Obomsawin explains. “My people have had to innovate endlessly to get our stories heard – learning to express ourselves in French\, English\, Abenaki… but sometimes words fail us\, and we must use sound. Sweet Tooth is a testament to this.” \n\n\n\nFree to the VTSU Community
