Swirling border pipes\, raging fiddle\, thunderous guitar and three rich voices blend to create a sound energetic enough to tear the roof off. \n\n\n\nEchoes can be heard of trad music from the 1960s and 70s\, but the years have slowly infested their music with the sounds of funk\, metal\, bluegrass\, swing\, and even klezmer. Cantrip sprung from a local session in Edinburgh nearly twenty years ago. Their driving music immediately caught the attention of the masses\, and they were quickly signed to the Foot Stompin’ label. With their first album “Silver” (2001) in hand\, Cantrip made its way across the water to the United States\, where they were received with roars and shouts (of enjoyment). After years of significant touring\, the band parted ways with Foot Stompin’ and began producing albums on their own. Two albums later (“Boneshaker” in 2005 and “Piping the Fish” in 2008)\, Cantrip had cemented itself as a perennial figure. \n\n\n\nAfter a period of hiatus in which children were born and continents were left for new ones\, Cantrip redefined its sound. The band tightened its arrangements while expanding its influence. New inspirations began creeping into the sound\, complementing the traditional foundation of the band. This more mature sound debuted on “The Crossing” (2016)\, to high acclaim. In 2019\, the band gathered 50 of its closest friends and fans and returned to its roots\, re-recording Silver in a live format (Cantrip Live)\, re-arranged yet with a more youthful sound than the original. \n\n\n\nThe process inspired a new approach for the band\, which they implemented for their fifth studio album “Undark”. In late 2019\, they spent a week in their original home of Edinburgh creating and recording new music. All of the tracks on this album were captured live in one take by engineer and longtime friend of the band Reuben Taylor. This seminal album shows a new\, darker side of the group while preserving the elements that audiences have come to know and love. After 20 years of touring\, Cantrip has found a character like no other. Orchestras commonly consist of between five and thirty timbila of varying sizes and ranges of pitch\, as well as a group of two to twelve male and female dancers performing in front of the orchestra. The accompanying music lyrics are regarded as an important form of social commentary on relevant issues of the day. Each orchestra has a different tuning and a slightly varying scale depending on where the orchestra comes from within the Chopi territory. The importance of this cultural tradition has been acknowledged in the decision by UNESCO to recognize the timbila as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2005. One of the aims of awarding this title is to protect and nurture the tradition and encourage its transmission to future generations. \n\n\n\nPlayed with mallets\, the balafon is made up of wooden slats and rows of calabash gourds\, which serve as natural amplifiers. The original musical instrument\, known as the “Sosso-Bala\,” survives in Kouyaté’s father’s home village of Niagassola\, on the Mali-Guinea border. In 2001\, the Sosso-Bala was declared an item of intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO and is brought out once a year for ceremonial playing. He has devoted his musical gift to expand the awareness of West African history and culture\, spread the word of peace and empower his listeners to take charge and realize their imagined futures. His performances have a magical effect on audiences as he skillfully transforms traditional songs and stories that he learned from his forefathers into modern day messages of peace\, love and harmony. His flexible virtuosity\, which enables him to move seamlessly from one musical genre to another\, has attracted the attention an eclectic mix of musicians who have sought him out as a collaborator. \n\n\n\nHe has performed toured and recorded with well-known African musicians\, such as Sidiki Conde (Tokounou)\, Abdoulaye Diabate\, Baaba Maal\, and Kakande\, and with many famous Western musicians\, such as Harry Belafonte\, Paul Simon\, Leroy Jenkins and Leni Stern. Easily transitioning between jazz\, pop\, R&B\, and classical music\, Yacouba can be seen regularly with Regina Carter\, Rachel Brown\, Oran Etkin and Benyoro. In addition to performing as a soloist and a guest kora artist\, Yacouba leads his own band SIYA. \n\n\n\nThe band adeptly harmonizes the ancient practice of musical story telling on the solo kora with the modern fuller harmonies of today’s musical instrumentation. The fundamental principle of the band is to unite people and send a message to its listeners to return to the “source” of community and humanity; SIYA in Bambara means “Source”. The sound of SIYA represents the breakthrough of the past few generations of Western African musicians who have opened up this musical experience to new audiences\, incorporating additional instruments and spanning musical genres. Bandleader\, guitarist and vocalist Jon Cristian Duque\, protégé of the late great Walter “Wolfman” Washington\, has led the band for over two decades. The core rhythm section of Duque\, Maureau and Joseph is a tight and funky unit that provides the infectious grooves and precision arrangements for which the band is known. For someone with her varied background\, New Orleans\, with its mix of cultures and musics\, seemed like a natural place to call home. She was born in Belgium\, raised in Singapore from the ages of 2 to 11\, and routinely shuttled between the homelands of her Belgian father and American mother. Over the years — working in New Orleans with musicians of all stripes\, from avant-garde jazz and classical to pop and funk — Gillet has developed a singular polyglot style. The core of her work is solo performance with live looping\, layering cello parts and vocal lines. Rhythmic figures emerge with bowed or plucked ostinatos or a variety of rubbing and slapping on the body of the cello\, then enhanced with melodies played or sung in her haunting alto. Her mixed musical vocabulary is commensurate with her disparate travels — French chanson of the 1940s\, Belgian folk tunes sung in Walloon\, a mix of rock and punk from the likes of PJ Harvey and X-Ray Spex\, and her own affecting originals\, like audience favorite “Julien\,” sung in a mix of French and English. Gillet’s solo performance is known for its enigmatic quality as she fabricates each song with innovative use of the cello and true mastery of live looping technology.
