SUMMARY:In Pursuit of Silence Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:In Pursuit of Silence is a meditative exploration of our relationship with silence\, sound and the impact of noise on our lives. Beginning with an ode to John Cage’s ground-breaking composition 4’33”\, In Pursuit of Silence takes us on an immersive cinematic journey around the globe– from a traditional tea ceremony in Kyoto\, to the streets of the loudest city on the planet\, Mumbai during the wild festival season – and inspires us to experience silence and celebrate the wonders of our world.  \n\n\n\nThe Huffington Post calls the film “replete with imagery that shimmers with the kind of almost otherworldly wonder one might associate with a Terrence Malick movie… This film does more than just tell a story\, it testifies to the sheer loveliness of anything — everything — when drenched in silence.”   \n\n\n\nHow to get tickets/sign up:   \n\n\n\nAdvanced signup is REQUIRED for Soundings students\, as seating is limited. The signup link can be found on the Soundings Canvas Page or at the link below.   \n\n\n\nThis event is free and open to the public. SUMMARY:Extreme Survival: Lessons from Those Who Triumphed Against All Odds
DESCRIPTION:We have all heard amazing stories of survival that rendered us awestruck. But too often\, we don’t realize the wealth of information we can learn from people who make it to the other side of life’s most daunting challenges. In this lecture\, New York Times bestselling author Michael J. Tougias chronicles harrowing survival stories and then discusses lessons to learn from these experiences.  \n\n\n\nFor his book Extreme Survival\, Tougias interviewed over 100 people who survived against all odds and researched many historical figures who have achieved the near-impossible. In this talk\, Tougias uses slides from several survival events to give the audience an edge-of-your-seat experience that also provides useful techniques that we can all use when faced with adversity or aspire to achieve a difficult goal.  \n\n\n\nHow to get tickets/sign up:   \n\n\n\nAdvanced signup is REQUIRED for Soundings students\, as seating is limited. The signup link can be found on the Soundings Canvas Page or at the link below.   \n\n\n\nThis event is free and open to the public. SUMMARY:The Power of Landscape
DESCRIPTION:Now that Vermont is reviewing Act 250—legislation that has done so much to create a unique rural landscape in our state—it’s worth asking what we value in landscape in the first place. Why are inhospitable mountains beautiful? What’s actually attractive about a ruined barn?  \n\n\n\nNew York Times Bestselling author M. T. Anderson considers the politics of beautiful scenery and the hidden national longings behind our sense of landscape. He’ll look at the history of our attitudes toward landscape\, traditional New England landscape painting\, and the work of some contemporary Vermont artists to discuss how different societies have found the sublime in their surroundings—and what that might mean for us in the future.  \n\n\n\nHow to get tickets/sign up:   \n\n\n\nAdvanced signup is REQUIRED for Soundings students\, as seating is limited. SUMMARY:American Coup: Wilmington 1898 Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:American Coup: Wilmington 1898 tells the little-known story of a deadly race massacre and carefully orchestrated insurrection in North Carolina’s largest city in 1898 — the only coup d’état in the history of the US. Stoking fears of “Negro Rule\,” self-described white supremacists used intimidation and violence to destroy Black political and economic power and overthrow Wilmington’s democratically-elected\, multi-racial government. Black residents were murdered and thousands were banished. The story of what happened in Wilmington was suppressed for decades until descendants and scholars began to investigate. Today\, many of those descendants — Black and white — seek the truth about this intentionally buried history.  \n\n\n\nHow to get tickets/sign up:   \n\n\n\nAdvanced signup is REQUIRED for Soundings students\, as seating is limited. SUMMARY:Anxious Nation Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Thanks to a generous donation from the Poultney Rotary Club\, we are excited to host a showing of the award-winning film Anxious Nation. \n\n\n\nAnxious Nation explores and captures the many faces and facets of anxiety. This feature-length documentary looks deeply into the anxiety and the mental health crisis in America\, especially its impact on young people (ages 10-26) and families. The film looks at the various ways anxiety shows up\, the nurture/nature debate\, situations in homes and society that are significantly adding to the problem\, the mental health crisis on college campuses\, and the impact of anxiety in lower socioeconomic communities\, especially the Brown and Black communities. We discuss stigma\, loneliness\, isolation\, disconnection\, the alarming rise in suicide\, the dangers of social media\, incorrect diagnoses\, and the horrific mental health ramifications of the COVID-19 pandemic. \n\n\n\nThe documentary (101 minutes) is offered in a joint effort with the Vermont State University Castleton Wellness Center and Rotary. The Poultney Rotary and Rotary District 7870 have underwritten the five-year movie and public performance rights obtained by the University.
