SUMMARY:A Gathering for the Future of Rural Vermont: Building Stronger Communities Together
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a gathering of Vermont educators\, employers\, and community leaders on October 25 at the Randolph campus of Vermont State University\, focused on the future of rural Vermont. We are thrilled to have Kenneth Cadow (Vermont principal and author of Gather\, to deliver the keynote address. \n\n\n\n\nMore About Gather\n\n\n\n\nThe event begins at 10:30 a.m. and finishes at 4:30 p.m.\, including a keynote address by Ken Cadow\, followed by a panel discussion on Rural Development\, Community Engagement\, and Vermont State University. The afternoon will include 2 workshop sessions\, each with a choice of an education or community-focused workshop. Each attendee will be welcome to morning refreshments\, lunch\, and a free copy of Gather. Faculty and staff at the Vermont State Colleges can pick up a free copy in advance at any of the Vermont State Colleges libraries ~ ask at the circulation desk (Locations and hours). \n\n\n\nA Gathering for the Future of Rural Vermont is sponsored by Vermont State University and the federally funded Rural Opportunities and Development (ROAD) to Success project (a project from the Rural Postsecondary and Economic Development Program)\, PR Award #P116W230038. \n\n\n\nThe Rural Opportunity and Development (ROAD) to Success project at Vermont State University is an initiative that targets Vermont’s rural population\, providing comprehensive support to rural Vermont high school graduates and transfer students from rural CCV campuses enrolled at or wishing to transfer to one of VTSUs rural campuses: Castleton\, Johnson\, Lyndon\, or Randolph. Services include flexible career pathways\, success advising\, 24/7 remote tutoring\, experiential learning\, and other support. The project goals include improved career options\, higher retention and graduation rates for rural students\, and a skilled workforce for high-demand occupations\, benefiting the Vermont economy. \n\n\n\n\nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Engineering Capstone Pitch Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Vermont State University offers senior electromechanical/electrical engineering and manufacturing capstone courses each year\, where student groups partner with industry to solve specific\, real problems presented by organizations. Student groups work with these partners to engineer solutions\, then test and refine those solutions\, over many months and under the guidance of faculty. \n\n\n\nOur students have worked with local/regional/global companies and/or other individuals and organizations. This year\, we are starting the capstone projects partway through the fall semester\, which gives students half of the fall semester and all of the spring semester to work on the projects. Most of these bachelor’s candidates completed a similar but simpler project when they were sophomores and all of them have had 3.5 years of hands-on training with modern equipment and engineering processes. We invite you to propose a project.

SUMMARY:Bridge Building Competition - Middle School
DESCRIPTION:What is the Bridge Building Competition? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nModel bridges promote the study and application of physics and engineering and help students develop “hands-on” skills. Participating students get to experience what it is to be an engineer\, designing structures to a set of specifications and then see them perform their function. \n\n\n\nTeams of students construct bridges in advance of the competition — using only popsicle sticks\, Elmer’s glue\, tooth picks\, and dental floss. Bridges are judged on aesthetics and originality of design\, presentation\, ultimate load carrying capacity\, strength-to-weight ratio\, and predicted failure point. Teams consist of 1-6 students. \n\n\n\nThe competition is designed for students/teachers interested in math\, science\, physics\, research\, and engineering (STEM areas). Teams receive awards for overall 1st\, 2nd\, and 3rd place as well as awards for aesthetics\, presentations\, bridge designs and team spirit. Check out our photos from previous year’s middle school and high school events! \n\n\n\n\nRegister Now\n\n\n\n\nAdditional Resources: \n\n\n\n\nBridge Building Competition Specifications\n\n\n\nExample of Bridge Design\n\n\n\nPhoto Release Form\n\n\n\nCampus Map
