Why Get a Master’s in Studio Arts at Vermont State?
Flexibility for Your Season of Life
Take advantage of the opportunity for mentored growth without interrupting your life. This is a single studio arts M.F.A. program with a flexible menu of course options that enable you to work on campus, remotely, or in a low-residency format. You can even combine all three options for maximum flexibility.
In the low-residency M.F.A. in Studio Arts format, you have the option of scheduling residency periods in a way that takes account of your circumstances, such as job flexibility, home life, and desire to work alongside a particular visiting artist or fellow student.
A Welcoming Community of Artists
Find inspiration, companionship, and common ground with others who share your dedication to the artistic vocation.
In the on-campus program, you’ll meet weekly with faculty and fellow students for critical discussion and reflection on your work.
In the low-residency option, you can work remotely, or through an additional application process, at the Vermont Studio Center for up to four residencies.
No matter which option you choose, including fully remote, you’ll build relationships with experienced faculty mentors who are invested in your professional development and personal success.
Professional Facilities
As an on-campus student, enjoy dedicated studio space and create work in the Vermont State University studios for printmaking, painting, sculpture, ceramics, drawing, and multi-media work. You’ll also have access to our darkroom, wood shop, welding area, carving benches, outdoor space for sculptural installations, and state-of-the-art computer lab for graphic design and digital art so you can always find the right tools to pursue your creative vision.
Multiple Levels of Growth
As you participate in our M.F.A. program, you’re going to make significant improvements in your artistic skills — as you’d expect.
But you’ll also grow in a number of other ways, including:
- Depth: Course readings, your own reflections, and discussion with others in the community will help you develop a more thoughtful, informed approach to your practice as an artist.
- Network: You’ll connect with fellow artists from the local community, the state, and even abroad as you build relationship that will support your growth and open new opportunities.
- Knowledge of the Profession: Achieving sustainable success as an artist takes a lot more than artistic skill. Through the program, you’ll expand your knowledge of the art world and the professional practices you’ll need to thrive in your profession.
