Why Study Clinical Mental Health at Vermont State?
- Nationally Renowned Curriculum: Our unique, nationally recognized curriculum will prepare you to meet the educational requirements for licensure as a clinical mental health or professional counselor.* Whichever concentration you choose, you will be prepared to work with people across the lifespan.
- Learning Community: Through our cohort model, you’ll develop a strong learning community during the program that will follow you into your career as a lifelong learner in clinical practice, policy, and administration.
- Licensure and Certification Preparation*: The curriculum is designed to meet the educational requirements for licensure as a clinical mental health or professional counselor in each of the states in which it is offered. The program also covers much of the content required for certification or licensure as a substance use counselor. Many of our graduates pursue dual licensure.
- Community Focus: The program’s mission is to prepare clinical mental health counselors and professional counselors to work in community and private-practice settings, to promote individual and community wellness, resilience, and recovery.
- Designed for Adult Learners: The program combines face-to-face instruction, remote, and distance-learning activities for adult learners in a cohort model. We offer intensive instruction in classes one weekend each month for cohorts in Vermont and other regional locations.
*Licensure is not guaranteed. It is under the jurisdiction of state licensing boards and requires meeting post-master’s practice requirements and passing the required exams.

Student Stories

“Every professor that I’ve had works currently in the field and so they bring loads of experience and knowledge to the coursework. I think the connections are the top benefit of this program. The folks in my cohort are just phenomenal. You meet people of all different ages and different levels of experience, and a lot of them are also in your community. You end up with connections where you may ask each other for a reference, a position, an insight, or any type of help in the field.” – Lydia Litwin
