Mary Martin went to the University of Iowa where she got her Ph.D. in art history and legal studies. Her dissertation was Legal Issues in African Art. Her research interests are where the art world and legal world intersect, such as cultural patrimony, censorship, forgery, free speech, importation and exportation of art.
