Maureen Stewart

Program Director/Assistant Professor

Dr. Stewart is a Program Director and Assistant Professor in the graduate counseling program at Vermont State University. She oversees the master’s in counseling program and Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study (CAGS) program, licensure, and advising. She received her doctorate in education, leadership for educational equity Latin@ cohort from the University of Colorado, Denver, and her master’s degree in counseling from the University of New Hampshire, and her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Saint Michael’s College, VT.

As a member of the University of Colorado, Denver C-PEER-Centered for Practice Engaged Education research interview team, her doctoral project “Case Study: Social Emotional Learning and the Role of the School Counselor” used a Concerns-Based Adoption Model (CBAM) Level of Use Interview methodology.

Prior to academia, Dr. Stewart worked in public education as a high school counselor for 26 years in Vermont and Colorado. She holds the NCC/NCSC, Nationally Certified Counselor/Nationally Certified School Counselor, and a Vermont Professional Educator License Level II with the school counseling endorsement.

Dr. Stewart is the Primary Investigator for a U.S. Department of Education Mental Health Professional Demonstration Grant, she received a $847,000 five-year grant to increase school counselors and school psychologists in rural, high-need Vermont school districts.

She is a consultant with NCWIT-National Center for Women and Information Technology and a development coach for the University of Wisconsin’s METRICS -Mental Health Evaluation, Training, Research, and Innovation Center for Schools.

Dr. Stewart is a faculty mentor for the F2F + (Face-to-Face Plus) learning modality cohort. She is a member of the Vermont School Counselor Association and the American School Counselor Association.
