Looking Back, What Moment or Experience at VTSU had the Biggest Impact on You?
Looking back, one of the biggest impacts that Vermont State University had on me was the structure of the program itself. Taking mostly five-week classes, often paired with one full semester course, made it possible for me to balance college while working full time as a lead teacher. That flexibility allowed me to stay on track to graduate on time while also continuing to gain hands-on experience in the classroom. Being able to immediately apply what I was learning in my courses to my work in early childhood education helped me grow into the educator I am today.
Who or What Helped You Succeed During Your Time at VTSU?
During my time at Vermont State University, I was fortunate to have many supportive people who helped me succeed. My director, who also served as my mentor teacher, played a huge role in helping me grow both personally and professionally through guidance, encouragement, and hands-on support in the classroom. I also had incredible support from Heather, my advisor and professor, who was always willing to offer guidance, answer questions, and help me whenever I needed it. Having strong mentors and supportive educators throughout my college experience made a big difference in helping me build confidence and succeed in the program.
How did Your VTSU Experience Prepare You for What Comes Next?
My experience at Vermont State University prepared me for what comes next by giving me the content knowledge and hands-on experiences needed to create inclusive and developmentally appropriate learning experiences for young children. Through my coursework and field experiences, I developed a deeper understanding of child development and how to build strong, meaningful relationships with both children and their families. VTSU also helped me grow professionally by teaching me the importance of communication, reflection, collaboration, and professionalism within the field of early childhood education. I feel more confident entering the next chapter of my career with the skills and knowledge needed to create a positive and supportive classroom community.
What are Your Plans After Graduation?
After graduation, I plan to continue in my current position as a lead teacher at an early childhood education program. I am excited to continue growing as an educator and to apply the knowledge and skills I have gained throughout my time at Vermont State University. I look forward to building an even stronger classroom community and creating a welcoming, supportive environment for all the children who walk into my classroom. I am especially excited to continue creating meaningful learning experiences while supporting children’s growth and relationships.
What Advice Would you Give to Incoming or Current VTSU Students?
One piece of advice I would give to incoming or current students at Vermont State University is to not be afraid to reach out for help when you need it. College can feel overwhelming at times, and it is easy to think you need to figure everything out on your own, but you do not. The advisors, professors, and staff are there because they want to support you and help you succeed. Even when reaching out feels uncomfortable, asking questions, checking in, or asking for support can make a huge difference.
