Brandon Stroup

Professor of Criminal and Restorative Justice

The senior criminal justice faculty at VTSU, Dr. Stroup has presented his research at numerous international, national, and regional conferences on best practices for restorative pedagogy and education, criminal justice policy, correctional programing, and GIS applications for criminal justice. His research has been published in the Journal of Contemporary Justice Review and the Journal of Criminal Justice Studies. Dr. Stroup was awarded the NEACJS Roslyn Muraskin Emerging Scholar Award in 2017 for his criminal justice curriculum development. Recently, Dr. Stroup was awarded the 2024 NAECJS Gerhard Mueller Innovator Award for his work expanding restorative justice education at the university level and his research related to educational backgrounds and preferences of restorative justice practitioners.

Dr. Stroup is currently the President of the Board of Directors for the St. Johnsbury Community and Restorative Justice Center. He also serves on the executive board of the Northeastern Association of Criminal Justice Sciences (NEACJS). Dr. Stroup has also appeared on WCAX as a criminal justice policy analyst, discussing Vermont criminal justice policy and crime rates.

Prior to teaching at VTSU, Dr. Stroup worked in the juvenile justice and adult corrections systems in Pennsylvania. In this work he provided restorative family group conferences for at-risk families and youth. He also developed and facilitated a parenting program for incarcerated fathers at the Indiana County Prison. Dr. Stroup is a trained mediator and has received restorative justice education from the University of Waterloo in Canada and the internationally renowned Center for Justice and Peacebuilding at Eastern Mennonite University.
