How to Apply for Financial Aid

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a tool administered by the U.S. Department of Education to determine the financial aid eligibility for students.

FAFSA and FAFSA Simplification

Vermont State University’s Office of Financial Aid is committed to bring students and families the information they need to make enrollment decisions as soon as possible. Vermont State recognizes that FAFSA delays this year may impact your decision timeline.

2024-2025 Applicants

All students applying for Fall 2024 or Spring 2025 entry to VTSU are encouraged to complete the 2024-25 FAFSA Form and have it reporting to Vermont State. After submission, students should receive an email acknowledgement from Federal Student Aid (this message will be sent to the email address used for FAFSA). VTSU can then expect to receive student FAFSA information from the U.S. Department of Education and, in turn, be able to provide estimated financial aid eligibility. We are currently processing awards for both new and returning students.

2025-2026 Applicants

The 2025-2026 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is now available to all students, new or returning. Students who plan to enroll or return for Fall 2025 will complete the new 2025-2026 FAFSA on StudentAid.gov.

Families are encouraged to use the Federal Student Aid Estimator to estimate their Federal Aid eligibility which will include the Federal Pell Grant, Federal Loans and Federal Work Study eligibility.

Create an FSA ID

Students and one parent whose information is on the FAFSA must each create an FSA ID to access the Federal Student Aid website. It is used to confirm your identity when accessing your financial aid information and electronically signing your federal financial aid documents. You must create your FSA ID to complete the FAFSA at studentaid.gov.

Do not use your high school email address as it may no longer be active.

Complete the FAFSA

You can complete the FAFSA online at studentaid.gov. You’ll need your social security number and tax information available. Be sure to select the correct academic year and use Vermont State University’s school code: 003698. All students should use this code, regardless of their campus affiliation.

You should complete the FAFSA as soon as possible. Your financial aid eligibility will be determined when we have a valid FAFSA, and you have been accepted to Vermont State University.

Review your FAFSA Submission Summary

Once your application has been processed, you’ll receive a FAFSA Submission Summary (FSS) to the email address provided on your FAFSA. It’s important to review this report for accuracy.

Receive Notice of your Financial Aid Eligibility

Your financial aid eligibility will be determined after you have submitted a valid FAFSA and have been admitted to Vermont State University. Your financial aid is subject to change and you may need to submit additional documentation to verify the information presented in your FAFSA.

Vermont State University automatically accepts all federal financial aid on behalf of students. The process for reducing and declining financial aid will be shared in the coming months.
