Vermont State’s Clinical Mental Health program prepares you for careers that promote individual and community wellness, resilience, and recovery. Gain strong preparation for licensure as a clinical mental health counselor in a highly relevant program designed for adult learners. We combine intensive weekend instruction once a month with remote learning and cover a wide variety of content on the clinical mental health community and private practice settings. Work with faculty who are scholar-practitioners with national and local expertise in counseling, integrated service delivery, research, and administration leadership.

Why Study Clinical Mental Health at Vermont State?

Nationally renowned curriculum: Our unique, nationally recognized curriculum will prepare you to meet the educational requirements for licensure as a clinical mental health or professional counselor.*  

Recognized for innovation: The program has been recognized as an Innovative Practice by the Annapolis Coalition in five categories: consumer and family / adult mental health, child / adolescent and school-based mental health, leadership, rural mental health, and substance use disorders treatment and persons in recovery. 

Licensure and certification preparation: The curriculum covers much of the content required for certification or licensure as a counselor for substance use disorders, and many of our graduates pursue dual licensure.  

Community focus: The program’s mission is to prepare professional counselors to work as clinical mental health counselors, in community and private-practice settings, to promote individual and community wellness, resilience, and recovery.  

Designed for adult learners: The program combines face-to-face instruction, remote, and distance-learning activities for adult learners. We offer intensive weekend instruction in classes one weekend a month for cohorts in Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Wisconsin, and Alaska.  

 *Licensure is not guaranteed. It is under the jurisdiction of state licensing boards, and you must meet post-master’s practice requirements and pass the required exams.

Internships & Jobs in Clinical Mental Health

At Vermont State, you’ll gain leading-edge skills for clinical mental health jobs through internships, co-ops, career coaching, and more. Our internship placements are guaranteed to grow your professional network.

The degree requires you to complete a 100-hour practicum and two or three 300-hour internships for up to 1,000 hours of practicum and internship experience. Your degree requirements will depend on the licensure requirements in your state.


The M.A. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling curriculum is based on a set of core competencies that have been drawn from research literature, evidence-based and promising clinical practices, and input from professionals, service users, and their families. The program is aligned with counseling standards but is not accredited by The Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).
