Dr. Charles Madsen, a pianist and music historian, has previously taught at the University of Arizona, the University of Oregon, and the Community College of Denver. Active as both a scholar and performer he specializes in piano music of the 19th and 20th centuries. Dr. Madsen has presented papers for the American Musicological Society in both the U.S. and Canada and has premiered new works for composers at conferences of the College Music Society. He has performed as both a piano soloist and collaborative artist throughout the United States and in Europe.
Dr. Madsen completed his Ph.D. in music history and piano performance at the University of Oregon and holds a bachelor’s degree in piano performance from Boston University. His main piano studies were with Anthony di Bonaventura, Victor Steinhardt, and Dean Kramer. He has had coaching or master classes with many notable pianists including: Lili Kraus, Martin Canin, Lillian Freundlich, Yuri Rozum, and Frank Wiens. At Castleton, Dr. Madsen, enjoys accompanying for the music department, coaching student performers, and teaching a variety of courses including the undergraduate music history and theory classes.
