I grew up in Indiana and attended Hanover College. I completed my degree in Exercise Science at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). I then attended the University of Montana and earned my M.S. in Exercise Science. After that, I went to the University of Utah to earn my PhD in Exercise Science. My research was in the area of cardiovascular genetics. Upon completion of my PhD, I worked as a post-doctoral research fellow at the Eccles Institute of Genetics, continuing my research in the are of cardiovascular genetics. After two years as a post-doc, I was hired as a Team Physiologist for the United States Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA). I worked as a physiologist for two years before taking a teaching job in Portland, OR. After one year, I was hired as a tenure-track faculty in Exercise Science at, what was then, Castleton State College. I have been here at Castleton since 2009. I am married to Gina Carlstrom and we have a daughter named Ruby.
