CASTLETON — Students at Vermont State University Castleton got a peek at what their futures could look like as young professionals on Tuesday.

Hosted in the VTSU Castleton Glenbrook Gym, the Spring Career Fair is the first large-scale second semester career fair the campus has held in some seven years, according to VTSU Director of Career Development & Innovation Jess Duncan.

“We usually have a large fair in the fall for (clubs). We are trying out a new model, and we invited over 50 employers to this event,” Duncan said. “It’s a great turnout. We have representation from lots of health agencies, criminal justice affiliated agencies, local community nonprofits, some student clubs (and more).”

She added that each campus holds smaller, niche fairs throughout the year for specific majors, but this most recent gathering hits a swath of students — including those who have yet to declare a major.

Among Tuesday’s employers were the U.S. Army, Community Care Network, Recovery House Inc., Wonderfeet Kids’ Museum and the Chamber & Economic Development of the Rutland Region. Additionally, a student photographer hosted a LinkedIn headshot photobooth for students.

“This fair is more aligned to all students and gives a broader understanding of what careers are available locally and a little beyond,” Duncan said. “Lots of these agencies employ from the ground up to a full-time, degree granted career. There are a large expanse of opportunities for all students, whether they’re just starting out, want an internship or they’re looking for a career after graduation.”

Heritage Family Credit Union Community Development Officer Mark Gossarth said events like VTSU’s career fairs are a great way to connect with students and show what career paths might be right in front of them.
