Vermont State Colleges System Board of Trustees Confirms Dr. Sherry Kollmann as President of Vermont State University

Winooski, VT – The Vermont State Colleges System (VSC) Board of Trustees has appointed Dr. Sherry Kollmann as system Vice Chancellor and President of Vermont State University (VTSU) following a comprehensive national search.

“Dr. Kollmann is a leader who understands the essential role that affordable public higher education plays for both students and employers,” said Lynn Dickinson, Chair of the Board of Trustees. “Throughout this national search, we sought a leader who could both build on VTSU’s strong foundation and help us meet the evolving needs of students, communities, and our state’s economy. Dr. Kollmann’s experience and commitment to student success make her the right person to lead VTSU into its next chapter, and we are thrilled to welcome her to Vermont.”

Dr. Kollmann brings 25 years of experience in higher education, business and public service. She currently serves as Chancellor of New Mexico State University Global Campus. During her tenure, the Global Campus grew its online enrollment to more than 3,500 students, developed more than 80 in-demand degree and certificate programs, secured $17 million in state appropriations, and generated more than $30 million in tuition revenue.

“Dr. Kollmann brings to this role a proven record of expanding access to higher education and leading bold advancements that build and strengthen academic programs,” shared Elizabeth Mauch, Chancellor of the Vermont State Colleges System. “It is precisely what is required of VTSU at this critical juncture. Her experience developing new pathways for students of all ages and at all phases of their lives will be essential as VTSU continues to grow and as we deepen collaboration across the entire system. At the same time, Dr. Kollmann will protect and enrich our rural campuses, leading efforts to shape them into vibrant education and community resources once again.”

A first-generation college student born to young parents who did not complete high school, Dr. Kollmann has spoken candidly about how her own educational journey shapes her enduring commitment to expanding access to education and training, and supporting students whose paths through higher education may not be traditional.

“I am honored and excited to join Vermont State University and the Vermont State Colleges System,” said Dr. Kollmann. “I firmly believe that education and training have the power to change lives in profound and lasting ways. My own path was not traditional, and that experience shaped my commitment to ensuring that students from all backgrounds have access to both high quality learning opportunities and the support systems they need to succeed. I am looking forward to working closely with VTSU’s incredible faculty and staff, as well as partners across Vermont.”

Dr. Kollmann is looking forward to returning to New England. Earlier in her career, Dr. Kollmann served as Senior Associate Dean of Business Programs at Southern New Hampshire University and as Vice President of the School of Graduate and Professional Studies at New England College. Before entering higher education administration, Dr. Kollmann worked at the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services, leading the development and implementation of statewide education and training programs.

Dr. Kollmann has a PhD in Instructional Psychology and Technology from the University of Oklahoma. She has published across peer-reviewed journals and contributed to an academic chapter. She has presented her research both nationally and internationally. Her research focuses on digital learning systems, learning science, motivational implications for faculty performance and inclusive and equity-driven education, with particular attention to underserved and rural populations. Dr. Kollmann also holds a Master of Education from the University of Oklahoma, a Master of Arts from Concordia University, and a Bachelor of Arts from Bethel University.

Dr. Kollmann will begin her role in July following the retirement of current VTSU President Dave Bergh, who has successfully led the institution through its first years as a unified university.
