Lyndon, VT – In the fall of 2013, Dr. Ben Mirkin arrived at what is now Vermont State University’s Lyndon campus with a dream. He envisioned a program where students could not only earn college credits, but also gain nationally recognized credentials in adventure education. Today, that dream is a vibrant reality, as Ben’s vision has transformed VTSU’s Outdoor Education, Leadership, and Tourism program into a national beacon of excellence.

This week, Ben was on the national stage in Colorado, accepting the prestigious American Mountain Guides Association (AMGA) Educator of the Year award

Reflecting on this monumental achievement, Ben shared, “I was blown away by being nominated! The best part of this was the week of the voting, when all of these former students reached out to me with such kind things to say. It was truly incredible. I never thought I would actually win but was so excited about the process and feeling the love from all of my former students.”

From the outset, Ben has been driven by a passion for adventure and a commitment to education. He set out to create coursework that would equip students with the skills and certifications needed to thrive in the outdoor industry. His efforts have resulted in opportunities for students at Vermont State University (VTSU) Lyndon to now be able to earn credentials in areas such as avalanche safety, wilderness medicine, rock climbing instruction, canoe and kayak instruction, ropes course facilitation, and ski lift operations.

Over his 11+ years at VTSU Lyndon, Ben has continually sought to enhance his own skills and knowledge. The University has supported his professional development, including a sabbatical this past spring where he earned the AMGA Certified Ice Instructor and Assistant Ski Guide credentials.

His journey with the AMGA has seen him become a Certified Rock Instructor, Apprentice Alpine Guide, and an instructor and examiner for the Single Pitch Instructor (SPI) course. Ben now teaches this 3-day AMGA course over an 8-day period, ensuring his students at VTSU Lyndon gain a deep and comprehensive understanding of climbing instruction. He has also taken on the role of course leader for the American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education (AIARE).

In 2023, the Outdoor Education, Leadership, and Tourism – Adventure Education program at VTSU Lyndon achieved a significant milestone by becoming the only program of its kind accredited by the AMGA. This accreditation has cemented its status as one of the top programs in the nation.

The AMGA Educator of the Year award is a testament to Ben’s dedication and impact. According to the AMGA, this award honors an educator who has made significant contributions to their students’ professional development and the educational effectiveness of the AMGA. The selection process involves nominations from peers, followed by a selection of finalists and voting by over 5000 AMGA members. Two quotes from those who nominated Ben paint a vivid picture of his influence:

“Through his work over the past decade with Vermont State University’s Outdoor Recreation, Leadership, and Tourism (OELT) Department, Ben has built a high-quality program dedicated to excellence and professionalism in the guiding industry,” shared one of his nominators. “VTSU’s OELT program is the only university program in the country that is AMGA accredited.”

Another offered, “Ben is patient, passionate, and an excellent educator. He strives to improve continuously. He is receptive to critical feedback, and when he makes a mistake, he acknowledges it and changes course for the betterment of his students.” They added, “He is a role model in the Northeast guiding and instructing scene, constantly seeking to be a better educator and mentor to the college students he supports. He has also crafted an excellent Adventure Education program that is in demand and directly attracts members to the AMGA who want to become climbing instructors or guides.”

Ben’s journey exemplifies the transformative power of vision and dedication, showcasing the exceptional support and commitment to excellence at VTSU. Students who choose to pursue an education in adventure education at VTSU will benefit from a program led by a passionate and highly skilled educator, within a community that fosters professional growth and excellence.
