VTSU Students Explore History and Diplomacy in Uzbekistan

First Day in Istanbul

Their journey began with a day in Istanbul, where they immersed themselves in the rich history of the city. They visited several historical sites, including the magnificent Hagia Sophia, which left them in awe of its architectural beauty and historical significance.

Arrival in Samarkand

The next day, they arrived in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. The group, consisting of nine American students led by Professor Alexander Strokanov, was warmly welcomed by the History Department at Samarkand State University. This visit was part of the “Study History on Places Where It Did Occur” program, organized by the Department of History of Uzbekistan.

Engaging with Scholars

During their visit, they had the opportunity to meet with professors and researchers from the Faculty of History at Samarkand State University. They engaged in scientific dialogues and explored the activities of the Archaeological Museum at the university. This interaction provided them with valuable insights into the rich historical and cultural heritage of Uzbekistan.

Attending the EU-Central Asia Summit

Their visit coincided with the first Central Asia-European Union summit held in Samarkand on April 3-4. This summit marked a significant event in the foreign policy of Uzbekistan, with discussions on expanding cooperation in trade, logistics, digitalization, green energy, and more. They attended several events at the summit, gaining a deeper understanding of the diplomatic efforts and international relations between Uzbekistan and the European Union.

A Promising Future

The summit highlighted the importance of promoting mutually beneficial cooperation between Central Asia and the European Union. Discussions included the potential of the Trans-Caspian Transport Corridor, digital infrastructure improvements, and the signing of a new Enhanced Partnership and Cooperation Agreement. These initiatives aim to foster economic growth, improve connectivity, and enhance living conditions in the region.

Their visit to Uzbekistan was an enriching experience, offering them a unique blend of historical exploration and contemporary diplomatic insights. They are grateful for the warm hospitality of Samarkand State University and look forward to future collaborations.
