Why Study Adventure Education at Vermont State
- Nationally Ranked: The B.S. in Outdoor Education, Leadership, and Tourism at Vermont State is the only program currently accredited by the American Mountain Guides Association (AMGA).
- Hands-on Learning: You’ll begin learning outside right away. During your first two years, you’ll build your foundation as an outdoor professional by becoming an expert backpacker and competent expedition canoeist, while also gaining experience in whatever technical skills you are interested in (climbing, paddling, skiing, or biking).
- Numerous Certification Opportunities: You’ll be able to graduate with nationally recognized certifications and credentials including the American Canoe Association (ACA) whitewater and flatwater canoe and kayak certifications, American Mountain Guides Association (AMGA) climbing certification, American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education (AIARE) Level 1, 2, and Rescue courses, Challenge Course Practitioner Level 1, Leave No Trace Master Educator, and Wilderness First Responder medical certification.

Accreditation
Vermont State’s Outdoor Education, Leadership & Tourism program is the only university program in the country to currently be accredited by the American Mountain Guides Association (AMGA). This accreditation applies specifically to Vermont State’s rock climbing, ice climbing, alpine climbing, and backcountry ski programs.
The AMGA Accreditation Program ensures conformance to high technical standards, strong programs, and a quality staff of AMGA-certified and engaged and engaging climbing instructors and guides.
