The majority of program-required courses are taught in-person on the campus(es) noted.

This program may include some in-person courses offered on campus or at an off-campus site, some blended courses with in-person or remote participation, and some online courses.

In this Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in School Counseling with Vermont State, you’ll learn how to build healthy school communities and positively impact individuals and the community as a school counselor.

Designed for working adults who already hold a master’s degree in counseling or a related field, you’ll build your knowledge base through courses grounded in the in-person student experience. Hone your skills in an extensive supervised internship of 600+ hours in a school setting, and graduate eligible to earn an Initial Educator’s License with a School Counseling endorsement (grades PK-12).

Our curriculum is aligned with the American School Counseling Association (ASCA) and the Vermont School Counselor Association (VTSCA).

Why Study School Counseling at Vermont State?

Drawing on your education and its practical application in the counseling or educational field, you will gain an understanding of counseling theory specific to educational settings. You’ll develop the skills needed to build a healthy and supportive school community with a focus on social, emotional, and academic growth.   

  • Set Your Own Pace: Complete your courses in a mix of evening classes, weekend intensives, and summer weeklong intensives, with in-person and remote options that vary by course.  
  • Advanced Approaches: Learn about the counselor’s role as a team member within a group that includes families, schools, agencies, and communities.  
  • 600+ Hours of Experience: Complete a supervised internship that spans a full academic year of at least 600 hours in a school counseling setting. We will help you find the right internship placement and support you with guidance and supervision throughout your fieldwork.
