Students and visitors are treated to outstanding displays of student and faculty work and exhibits of renowned regional and national artists’ work across genres. We invite you to linger in our on-campus spaces and to visit the galleries and studios in the wider community, too.
Christine Price Gallery
Launch ExperienceThe Christine Price Gallery is located within the Fine Arts Center, a hub of creativity on the Castleton campus. Named for the children’s author and illustrator of the same name, the gallery features rotating student art exhibits and traveling installations from nationally renowned artists.

November 11 – December 21: Senior Exhibition
The Christine Price Gallery presents a group exhibition with seniors Julie Griffith, Matthew Stoddard, And Jorja McLeod.
Julie Griffith presents Sea Level, a series that illustrates her life through portraiture and the Surfer Series, which tells a story from another dimension. Sea Level is a window into the artist’s interactions with friends, family, and the culture surrounding us.
Matthew Stoddard aims to represent the ebb and flow of life through the decomposition and deterioration of animate and inanimate things. Inspired by cubism and surrealism, he seeks to tap into the subconscious and reveal hidden meanings.
Through her art, Jorja McLeod aims to evoke emotions and bring light to the mental health crisis.

Castleton Bank Gallery
Launch ExperienceBuilt in 1865-67 and renovated in 1950, this is one of the most iconic buildings in downtown Rutland. The gallery showcases a wide variety of artwork, ranging from local elementary and secondary school displays to works from local and nationally recognized artists.

October 19 – December 21: P.O.V. Three Vermont Artists: Alicia Williams, JR Ewing, and Maxwell Ward
The VTSU Castleton Bank Gallery presents a group exhibition with artists Alicia Williams, JR Ewing, and Maxwell Ward. Through their diversity of expression, the show explores the different perspectives of Vermont artists.
Maxwell Ward is a deaf, US-based photographer and videographer from Australia. He captures the beauty of weddings, family moments, and stunning scenery, blending his unique perspective with a natural, candid style.
J.R. Ewing is a self-taught artist who engages with just about any style that sparks his creative output. From his landscapes, abstracts, and bovine series, J.R. continues to produce an eclectic selection of work. Originally born in Germany, J.R. has made Rutland his home for the past 20 years.
Alicia Williams is a self-taught Vermont artist who paints in acrylics. Her influences include music, classic horror and cinema, and the Art Deco period. She specializes in portraiture and realism with a unique personal style.

The Johnson campus itself is an outdoor gallery, with sculptures located on well-trodden paths and tucked within groves of trees and a growing number of murals gracing campus buildings. Indoor spaces include the Julian Scott and Black Box galleries.
Julian Scott Memorial Gallery
Launch ExperienceAn airy, light-filled contemporary gallery located in the Dibden Center, the Julian Scott Memorial Gallery is the main visual arts exhibit venue on campus. The gallery hosts exhibits by M.F.A. Fine Arts students and work by faculty and visual artists from around the region and world. The gallery is named for one of Vermont’s most notable artists who lived in Johnson and was a decorated Union Army soldier and drummer during the Civil War, and an accomplished painter and Civil War artist. One of his largest paintings of the Civil War, “The Battle of Cedar Creek,” hangs in the Vermont State House lobby in Montpelier.
Black Box Gallery
The Visual Arts Center on campus is home to the Black Box Gallery which features a fully customizable space for art installation lighting and effects as well as traditional exhibits.
Vermont Studio Center
Launch ExperienceJust down the hill from campus, the Vermont Studio Center welcomes artists and writers for residencies and the public for exhibits and talks. Artists from within and outside the region visit and exhibit here, and the center offers a wonderful window into the larger art world from right here in Johnson
Quimby Gallery
Launch ExperienceThe Quimby Gallery is a beautiful, light-filled space where the community comes together to view exhibits by local artists throughout the year along with student work during an exhibit each spring.
Satellite Gallery
Launch ExperienceThe Satellite Gallery is a community and event space in St. Johnsbury, Vermont that holds monthly shows featuring Vermont artists and hosts a variety of art and music events, including the work of VTSU students and faculty.
