Vermont State’s mission is to prepare all students for meaningful work and responsible citizenship by fostering their intellectual, personal, and creative growth in an accessible, caring, and inclusive learning community. Whether you’re joining us in person or online, we’re here to support you every step of the way.
VTSU is a member of the Common App. Undergraduate first year and transfer students can opt to apply online using the Common App.
When you apply, you will have access to your personal Application Status Page. All of the materials required for you to submit to complete your application file will appear as a checklist on your page. Requirements that are unique to you or for your program may appear on your checklist.
What is Vermont State Looking for in our Undergraduates?
Vermont State University Admissions will review your application individually and holistically. All application materials submitted will be taken into consideration for acceptance. We also encourage you to connect with admissions, as personalized contact enables us to get to know you and assist you through the process.
It is very important that you are prepared to complete the coursework you will face at Vermont State, and in your specified program of study, and it is with your success in mind that we carefully review your academic foundation. We prefer that candidates include the following college preparatory courses in their high school programs:
4 years of English
3 years of math
3-4 years of social science
2-3 years of laboratory science
Some academic programs require that you have specific credentials or prerequisite courses completed prior to application and/or enrollment. See Program Admission Requirements for additional information.
High school ‘B’ average (85% or 3.0) student on a 4.0 academic scale. Average is provided as helpful information, and admitted student profiles range broadly. For high school students with no GPA available, such as proficiency-based or narrative transcript, academic preparation will be evaluated on an individual basis using the high school profile as a guideline.
Transfer applicants must have a 2.0 cumulative GPA to be considered for admission.
The strength of each student’s overall course selection and in-progress coursework is recognized and considered in review. Program-specific GPA is required for some majors.
Where required, these allow us to gain a greater understanding of your opportunity for success at Vermont State and in your chosen program of study. Your essay, a brief personal statement, tells us more about you in your own words. Your letters of recommendation are extremely valuable, as these give us insight to your qualities and characteristics from the perspective of those who know you best.
Scores are optional for most scholars seeking admission. Scores will be considered in review if submitted. Tests provide additional information to support your academic profile, yet greater emphasis is placed on your transcript course selection and academic performance. See Application Checklist Requirements for program-specific requirements and details for international applicants.

After you apply, checklist items required for your program will be listed on your Application Status Page, where you will be able to track your materials.

This is required in all circumstances where coursework has been completed or attempted. If you have taken classes within the Vermont State Colleges, such as at the Community College of Vermont, we will obtain your official transcript from our shared records system. Unofficial documents may be used for review purposes when a student is currently in progress with coursework, yet official documents will be required for enrollment in these circumstances.
Personal statement/essay and letter of recommendation are optional for many programs. Additional letters and letter content are required when applying to some academic programs; see program specific requirements below. All submitted letters should be current and submitted from the author.
If you have 18 or less post-secondary college credits, your high school transcript or GED is required.
Test scores are only required when applying to a program with testing requirement; see program specific requirements below.
Many department programs have specific prerequisite requirements and/or require your academic profile to include specific courses. Please review our full list of program admission requirements.

Whether you are applying on a deadline or under rolling admission, we encourage students to apply early to provide the best opportunity for informed decision making and financial aid. We encourage careful attention to aid, scholarship, and enrollment deadlines.
After you apply, we will email you a personal link to your Application Status Page where you will be able to track your application. Please ensure we always have your most up-to-date email address on file.
Our application review begins in September for spring semester enrollment (semester beginning in January), November for fall semester enrollment (semester beginning in the end of August), and on a rolling basis for all other terms. All decisions are notified by email on a rolling basis, and admissions letters are posted to your Application Status Page. When your application and all required materials are submitted, we will do our best to send you notification of our decision within 10 business days.
Decisions for December 1 deadline programs are expected to be released in early February for applicants who completed their application by the priority deadline.
Submitting Undergraduate Application Materials
Please note that items submitted with the Common App will be received by Vermont State Admissions and do not have to be resubmitted.

Transfer students who have taken classes within the Vermont State Colleges, such as at the Community College of Vermont, do not have to send a Vermont State Colleges transcript, as we will obtain your official transcript from our shared records system.
Test scores
Test score can be officially submitted from the testing organization. If submitting SAT or ACT, these can be received from your high school and considered official. Students applying to a program where Accuplacer is required, see Accuplacer testing information.
