Exploring Vermont’s Diverse Ecosystems: A Semester with VTSU Johnson’s Ornithology Class

This semester, the Ornithology class at VTSU Johnson embarked on an exciting journey through Vermont’s diverse ecosystems, offering students hands-on experiences with the state’s rich birdlife.

Dead Creek Wildlife Management Area was one of the standout destinations, where students marveled at the sight of Snow Geese in their natural habitat. This trip provided a unique opportunity to observe these magnificent birds up close and learn about their migratory patterns.

Another highlight was the visit to Moose Bog, renowned for its boreal species. Here, students were thrilled to encounter Black-capped Chickadees and Red-breasted Nuthatches, which even landed on their hands, creating unforgettable moments of connection with nature.

The class also explored the Vermont Institute of Natural Science (VINS), where they had the chance to see raptors up close. This visit allowed students to gain a deeper understanding of these powerful birds of prey and their roles in the ecosystem.

These field trips not only enriched the students’ knowledge of ornithology but also fostered a profound appreciation for Vermont’s natural beauty and biodiversity. The hands-on experiences and close encounters with wildlife have undoubtedly left a lasting impact on the students, inspiring many to continue exploring and conserving the natural world.
