NBC5 In Depth: Meet VTSU’s chief diversity officer

Creating a welcoming atmosphere for a wide range of learners should benefit the state’s workforce development needs, Paul Yoon told NBC5 In Depth.

Vermont State University has a new chief diversity officer. Paul Suk-Hyun Yoon started at VTSU in November. He previously worked at the University of Vermont as UVM’s senior advisor for inclusive excellence.

In his new role at VTSU, Yoon will oversee programming, policies and strategy around diversity, equity, inclusion and social justice initiatives.

Yoon told NBC5 News that a focus on these areas is important as the university works to attract and retain more students in Vermont. Yoon said policy moves in other states, such as restrictions on transgender people using restrooms consistent with their gender identity, mean applicants may be looking for a place where they can be their authentic selves. This could present an opportunity to tell prospective students that Vermont and VTSU are welcoming places, Yoon said in an interview with NBC5 In Depth.
