The following offers some brief answers to the questions students and families have about Vermont State University. We’re happy to connect with you personally if you have additional questions or want to learn more about a specific program of interest. Please reach out to us at Admissions@VermontState.edu.
Academics & Programs
Not everyone needs a degree – and that’s okay. Matriculated students are working toward a degree and enroll through Admissions office. Non-Matriculated students aren’t pursing a degree and can register for up to three courses at a time with a simple form; no application required.
Keep in mind that federal and VTSU financial aid doesn’t apply to non-matriculated enrollment, though private loans and non-degree grants may be options worth exploring to help with paying for your education.
At VTSU learning moves beyond the classroom and discussion board. Internships, clinical placements, co-ops, practicums, student teaching, field placements, and independent research aren’t extras; they’re built into the experience. Nearly 8 out of 10 graduates from the class of 2025 completed at least one experiential learning opportunity.

Yes – and many VTSU students do. Our programs are built around real lives and real schedules. Asynchronous online options mean you can complete coursework and lectures on your own time, not ours. If your schedule provides more flexibility, our synchronous online classes or in-person programs can be progressed through at your own pace.
Every undergraduate program at VTSU includes a shared general education framework – because real-world readiness takes more than a major. Our unified gen ed gives you a wide selection of courses to explore, so you build broad skills and perspectives that will hold up beyond graduation.
Your path, your campus – or no campus at all. VTSU programs are available in-person, online, or through a mix of both. Some programs require specific labs or facilities only available at certain locations, but many are available from wherever you are in Vermont and beyond.
No matter where you’re studying – whether it’s online, at a campus in Castleton Johnson, Lyndon, Randolph, or Williston, or at a learning site in Killington, Bennington, or elsewhere, our admissions team is here to help you find the right fit.
Student Support & Well-being
From day one, you’ll have access to tutoring, academic coaching, and disability services through our Academic Support office, and mental health and wellness resources through our Wellness office. The same level of support reached you whether you’re studying from a campus or a kitchen table.
Affordability is central to what VTSU is built on. You’ll find cost information on our tuition and fees page, as well as in the “Affordability and Costs” section of academic program pages.
Financial aid and scholarships are available and our team is ready to walk through the options with you. Reach out anytime to FinancialAid@VermontState.edu.
Campus Life & Facilities
A VTSU SHAPE membership gets you into any SHAPE fitness center or pool across our residential campuses. Hours, memberships, and day-rate information are posted on each campus athletics site: Castleton SHAPE, Johnson SHAPE, Lyndon SHAPE, Randolph SHAPE
There’s a place for you in VTSU athletics – varsity, club, or intramural. Competition, community, wellness, and more than a little fun: it’s woven into life on every campus that fields a team.
Whether you live on campus or commute, VTSU offers dining services and meal plans designed to fit your schedule. Explore your options at each campus on our residence life page.
Meal plans can be charged to your student account, which means financial aid can help cover the cost. Questions about billing? Reach out to StudentFinances@VermontState.edu.
Community & Events
Yes, several of our campuses open their doors to the community for private events like weddings, conferences, workshops, and more. Connect with our Conferences & Events team to find the right space and get started with your reservation.
VTSU campuses are alive with events. Lectures, performances, athletics, and more – and most of them are open to the public. Browse everything happening across all campuses on our online event calendar.
Summer at VTSU is for all ages. We run sports camps for youth through grade 12, a STEM Design Thinking & Cultural Immersion program of multilingual high schoolers, and the 3D technology institute where advanced high school students can earn up to nine college credits while exploring cutting-edge 3D tech.
Workforce & Professional Development
Vermont needs skilled workers, and VTSU is here to train them. Our Workforce Development Division offers certifications, registered apprenticeships, and hands-on training in fields like plumbing, electrical, butcher, grazing management, and more – partnering directly with the state to build the workforce Vermont depends on. If you’re looking to level up your career or change direction entirely, this is where you start.
Records & Alumni
Our online system, Parchment, can mail a transcript to you or on your behalf in many different formats to ensure it’s received in a timely manner for a low cost.
If you order a new transcript, it will list “Vermont State University,” but it will also include the name of the institution you earned your degree at and a “Transcript Key” that includes an explanation of the name change.
For more information, we encourage you to view our alumni resources page.
