This program is eligible for international students requiring an F-1 visa.
What is an In-Person Plus program?
Program-required courses are taught through a combination of in-person and remote delivery. Remote learning may require meeting at a specific time or may not have a specific class time; all weekly interactions and assignments for remote courses are completed through a learning site.
Prepare to support others as they move toward greater health and well-being. In the B.S. in Health Science program at Vermont State University, you’ll take courses in nutrition, health, fitness, psychology, biology, chemistry, and more that will lay a foundation for a range of paths within the allied health professions.
You’ll then choose one of four concentrations, including an accelerated pre-athletic training program, to add specialized knowledge to align with your career goals. Whether you plan to continue your training in a professional allied health program or launch out as a wellness coach, personal trainer, health educator, or other helping professional, abundant hands-on experience and a supportive environment will give you skills and confidence for what’s next.
We understand that the cost and value of your education is important to you. That's why we're committed to being one of the most affordable colleges in Vermont and why more than 80% of our students receive aid. We're here to help you fit this program into your unique financial picture. Contact this program's Admissions Counselor any time to discuss what types of financial aid are right for you.

Why Study Health Science at Vermont State?
Versatile Foundation: Prepare for a future in health care. A bachelor’s degree in Health Science provides you with professional knowledge and skills essential for future employment, whichever direction you take. All Health Science majors complete an internship, clinical, or research experience, allowing you to gain hands-on experience before you graduate.
Growing Field: With an aging population and a greater focus on quality of life and longevity, jobs in health and wellness are plentiful, both locally and nationally. Eight out of the top 20 fastest-growing occupations are allied health careers.
Meaningful Impact: When you graduate, you’ll be equipped with tools to improve the quality of life of those in your community, regardless of the path you pursue. Our curriculum focuses on wellness promotion and injury and disease prevention in diverse populations.
Excellent Grad School Preparation: Open the door to advanced training. Our graduates frequently receive preferred admission to several schools, including Vermont State’s Master of Athletic Training, Russell Sage College Graduate School, and Albany College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences.
Students can go on to earn a Master’s in Occupational Therapy (MS-OT), a Doctorate in Physical Therapy (DPT) from Russell Sage, or participate in the 3+4 Pharmacy Degree with Albany College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences.
What You’ll Learn
To earn Vermont State’s bachelor’s degree in health science, you’ll first complete a core of courses in natural and social sciences, math, health, and wellness that form the foundation for many health science jobs.
Then, you’ll choose one of four concentrations that are designed for a particular career direction:
General Health Science: Keep your options open with broad knowledge for career flexibility or various graduate programs.
Health & Wellness Coaching: Prepare for a career in personal training, corporate health and wellness, community health education, or health/wellness coaching. The curriculum will get you ready to take the National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching certifying exam.
Pre-Athletic Training: Take an accelerated track to become an athletic trainer. You can complete your bachelor’s and master’s in Vermont State’s CAATE-accredited program in as little as five years.
Pre-Allied Health Studies: This concentration is designed to give you the prerequisite coursework you’ll need for success when applying to professional programs in the health care field, such as nutrition, occupational therapy, physical therapy, physician’s assistant, and chiropractic medicine.
At Vermont State, you’ll grow your network and gain leading-edge skills for health science jobs through internships, career coaching, research, and more. The B.S. in Health Science program includes a wide range of hands-on research and learning opportunities as part of your program. Here’s just a sampling:
Take part in human health research through physiology and clinical trial investigations — then present your findings at scientific conferences.
Build your resume by completing your CPR and First Aid certifications as part of your curriculum.
Observe health care professionals, including athletic trainers and physical therapists, in their practices.
Take part in clinical assignments with men’s and women’s varsity athletic teams, cooperative experiences at other area colleges, high schools, and local ski resorts.
“The professors know who you are, even in lecture classes like anatomy or chemistry. That connection really made me not want to disappoint them and try that much harder to do well in their classes.”
Grandon Smith
“My advisors have been super helpful about everything, from classes to more personal help — which I wouldn’t have received at a bigger school. Here, I’m not just a number.”
