Our music program combines a foundation in instrumentation, choral music, and general music methods with real-world performing and teaching to prepare you to stand out in your career.

Our B.M. major has an excellent job placement record for our students, and the faculty will guide you through Vermont’s teacher certification process. Tailored to Your Goals: You’ll work with your faculty advisor to take classes most relevant to your professional goals. Vermont State offers courses for vocal and instrumental music at every level, PreK-12.
Established Credentials: Our program is a member of the National Association of Music Educators and the Vermont Music Educators Association. You can participate in activities of student chapters of these organizations.
Partnerships with Schools: We have strong collaborations with local schools, so you’ll have opportunities to observe and work with professionals in the field.
Campus Ensembles: Vermont State has a number of campus groups you can join: traditional choral and wind ensembles, our a cappella group, a jazz ensemble, and our Spartan Spirit Band.
What You’ll Learn
Starting early on in our program, you’ll have real-life opportunities to build the skills you need to excel and to meet employers’ expectations in music careers:
Classroom Time: You’ll observe and work in classrooms beginning in your first year and spend your last semester student teaching.
Leadership Options: You can grow as a student leader through a conducting practicum, student organizations, and involvement in community events, such as the annual Honors Festival of high school choral and band performances.
You’ll spend much of your time with the off-campus community, with teachers in classrooms, at performances around the country, and attending and presenting at conferences of student music organizations in and outside Vermont. These are excellent ways to build your talents, network and grow through professional development, and open doors for your career.
