Foundations of Education, M.A.

What is an Online program?

Online programs: Teaching and learning takes place over the internet, allowing students to access course materials, interact with instructors and peers, and complete assignments remotely. Some programs may require in-person meetings, residency, or fieldwork.

Vermont State’s M.A. in Foundations of Education is a personalized professional learning opportunity for educators across PreK-12 and higher education. It is also designed for professionals from other sectors interested in the field of education. The program emphasizes critical scholar-practitioner inquiry. Courses include an interdisciplinary core in educational studies, plus a customizable concentration for self-directed, job-embedded, applied learning. Teachers may design the concentration to add endorsements.

All courses are completed online. A field-based option is available; consult the faculty advisor for details. Courses are offered during fall, spring, and summer semesters, and you may be eligible to transfer up to 12 degree-approved credits from accredited institutions.

Participants who already have an advanced degree may take the Foundations of Education, Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study.

Student Stories

“I have always been a knowledge seeker and question ponderer. The Foundations of Education program allowed me to cultivate these parts of myself with refined tools. I have finally been able to build a foundation of grounded credibility for new and old beliefs, and values. Along the way, I had to let go of, discard, and renegotiate beliefs and understandings that did not hold up under scrutiny, critique, and new knowledge.”

Sarah Jo Willey

“Applying to a program where I got to design a lot of the content was definitely out of my comfort zone. I was used to taking classes with clear goals and assignments. However, I was happily surprised how empowering it was to study exactly how I wanted, and design creative ways to show my learning. I would highly recommend this program to anyone.”
