What You’ll Learn

At Vermont State, you’ll discover that the B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies stands out from the rest. In our diverse undergraduate curriculum, you’re given the freedom to shape your own academic path. Explore different subjects and create a degree that fits your personal and career goals. During the program, you will: 

• Work closely with an advisor to chart your path 
• Select three areas of study tailored to your goals and interests 
• Build a unique degree program with courses that support your three areas of study 
• Write a narrative that connects your areas of study to your goals and interests 

After you’ve set your academic course and received approval from the Interdisciplinary Studies Committee, the program concludes with a capstone seminar. In this final stage, you’ll present a senior project, showcasing your broad knowledge across your chosen areas of study. 

Outside the Classroom, In the Community

Take your learning beyond the classroom with the Interdisciplinary B.A. program at Vermont State: 

• Extended Classroom Experience (ECE): Put your interdisciplinary knowledge to work through a required ECE. This could include community service projects, practicums, work, internships, or other impactful experiences. Recent internships have included the College Steps program at Johnson, the Concord (NH) Equality Health Center, and Lamoille County’s Meals On Wheels. 
• Find Your Path: Our graduates have ventured into diverse fields. Picture yourself launching a daycare center, teaching the next generation, or opening your own dance studio. And if you’re thinking of further studies elsewhere, destinations like Scotland might be on your horizon. 

Program Core: 

Earn a total of 42 credits, ensuring at least 21 credits are at the 3000-4000 level. Allocate your credits as follows: 

• 18 credits for your Primary Area of Study 
• 12 credits for your Secondary Area of Study 
• 9 credits for your Tertiary Area of Study 

Engage in an Extended Classroom Experience (ECE) for a minimum of 20 hours, where you can opt for internships, applied learning, and more. 

Enroll in INT 4610, the Senior Seminar, for 3 credits. 

Important:  

• You must complete at least 12 of the total 42 credits in the subsequent semesters, after your Plan of Study gets approved,. 
• Achieve a grade of C- or higher in all courses in your Plan of Study. 
• While courses like Student Teaching in Education don’t count towards the core 42 credits, they can satisfy the ECE requirement.
