Some locations where this program is offered are eligible for international students requiring an F-1 visa.
What is an In-Person Plus program?
Program-required courses are taught through a combination of in-person and remote delivery. Remote learning may require meeting at a specific time or may not have a specific class time; all weekly interactions and assignments for remote courses are completed through a learning site.

Why Study General Mathematics at Vermont State?
Vermont State’s Mathematics Concentration sets you on a rigorous quest to discover patterns in numbers. As a math major, you will acquire a broad and solid base in mathematics which will prepare you for both further study and a range of careers. The Mathematics Concentration includes electives in Python and Java programming as well as special topics like logic in music and art. Our knowledgeable and supportive mathematics faculty teach in the realms of pure mathematics, applied mathematics, and statistics to inspire you to understand and harness the power of these disciplines.
Practical Experience: You will be encouraged to provide insight into new and existing courses, attend seminars, and to participate in mathematical activities at the local, regional, and national levels.
Opportunity: A Mathematics degree from Vermont State prepares you for entering a professional environment or a graduate program at the master’s or doctoral level.
Individual Attention: Our small class sizes will provide you with an individualized learning experience and coursework will allow you to conduct research projects under the guidance of our experienced faculty.
Internships: You can complete an internship for credit in the Mathematics Concentration.
What You’ll Learn
You’ll study one of western civilization’s oldest and richest disciplines and be able to apply advanced mathematics to solve real-word problems:
Calculate the derivative of any algebraic or transcendental function.
Use the definite integral (and limits of sums) to solve real-world problems.
Apply the method of Lagrange Multipliers to optimization problems.
Model a variety of real-world situations with an appropriate differential equation.
Use linear algebra and matrices to solve real-world problems.
Calculate probabilities and apply them to determine the unusualness of events.
Create and use descriptive statistics to summarize, analyze and compare data sets.
Construct a lucid mathematical proof that demonstrates the logic while using proper grammar and precise mathematical notation.
Explore complex and unfamiliar mathematical ideas while effectively communicating these ideas both orally and in writing.
You will be encouraged to secure a mathematics-related internship for credit. Examples of recent employers included Rutland Regional Medical Center, Green Mountain Power, the Rutland Police Department, and insurance companies for students interested in actuarial work.
Special Facilities
The Johnson and Lyndon campuses have a standing relationship with the Vermont Biomedical Research Network (VBRN) which provides funding for faculty-mentored peer research in applications of mathematics and data science to human health, in particular, the use of artificial intelligence to automate the diagnosis of certain lung conditions. We have high-powered computing equipment on campus, as well as access to the UVM Vermont Advanced Computing Core for handling large and complex computing tasks. VBRN also provides a standing opportunity for students to obtain an industry internship in Vermont-based biomedical companies.
“I am so happy to have had wonderful, caring professors and truly loved the feeling of being on campus and part of a caring, outgoing community. I have met so many incredible people that will impact my life forever. I had many opportunities to take on leadership responsibilities, which have helped me to grow in my profession.”
