Protect Your Personal Information

Avoid sharing details like your full name, birthdate, address, phone number, or Social Security number. These can be used to steal your identity or track your location.

Be Thoughtful About What You Post

Photos, videos, and comments that seem funny now could hurt your chances with future employers or internships. Your online presence is not only visible—it’s often permanent. Even deleted posts can be saved, shared, or archived.

Be Location-Aware

Many apps tag your location automatically. Consider turning off location sharing to protect your privacy and avoid broadcasting where you are. Also consider not posting your location in real time to protect your immediate safety.

Personal Social Media Guidelines for VTSU Faculty & Staff

If you’re using social media for personal expression, here are some best practices to help you maintain a responsible and professional online presence as a member of the Vermont State University community.

Do not share confidential or sensitive information about VTSU students, colleagues, or alumni. All employees must comply with federal privacy laws such as FERPA and HIPAA, as well as university and NCAA policies. When unsure, err on the side of caution.

Think Before You Post

Social media platforms are not private. Even posts intended for a limited audience can be shared widely. Use privacy settings but understand their limitations. What you post today may be searchable tomorrow and could affect your professional reputation.

If you mention your role at VTSU in a personal post, clarify that your opinions are your own. A simple disclaimer like this can help:

If you identify yourself with VTSU online, your comments may be associated with the university—even if you include a disclaimer. Engage in thoughtful, respectful dialogue. Civil discussion builds credibility and a stronger professional network.

When participating in online groups or discussions, share insights that add value. Avoid excessive self-promotion, especially regarding VTSU events or personal projects, unless they are clearly relevant to the audience. Direct people with specific VTSU questions to the appropriate resource and avoid sharing unverified information.

Avoid sharing details such as your home address, phone number, or personal email. These can be exploited by scammers or identity thieves. Use strong passwords, be cautious of phishing attempts, and log out of accounts on shared devices.

You are responsible for what you post—on your own pages and elsewhere. Posts that are defamatory, copyrighted, or otherwise inappropriate can have legal consequences. Employers and others may review your online presence, so post with care.

Do not use the VTSU logo or name to endorse products, causes, or political candidates. University branding should only be used in official communications or with proper authorization.

You are welcome to link to the VTSU homepage or official VTSU social media accounts from your personal profiles.
