In Person Plus programs are In Person with options for cross-campus classes and flexibility for remote study.

Our Counseling program gives you experience in the theory and practice of mental health, substance use disorders, and school counseling. Our graduates demonstrate a strong grounding in the knowledge and skills of the counseling profession, as well as in person-centered and strength-based approaches. You will learn how to lead a culturally fluid practice in a diverse society and drive leadership, systems change, and advocacy in the profession, the community, and the larger society. Our flexible program lets you focus on an area of interest to tailor your studies to your career goals. 

Why Study Counseling at Vermont State?

Unique program: Our curriculum includes a core of required courses, additional specialization coursework in your area of interest, a personal growth experience, and an internship with an accompanying seminar. 

Self-paced learning: It usually takes 2.5 to 3.5 years to finish the degree, depending on your individualized plan of study. A thesis is not required.  

Expert faculty: Faculty are scholar-practitioners who bring national and local expertise in mental health counseling, school counseling, integrated service delivery, research, and administration to the program.  

Licensure preparation: The program prepares students to pursue licensure in clinical mental health, substance use, or school counseling.
