What You’ll Learn

Students pursuing a Music concentration receive individual attention and ample opportunities to develop their skills through music theory, history, conducting, performance and experience.  

• Strong training and performance opportunities: Receive a strong foundation in music theory and ear training, and hone your performance skills on your primary instrument/voice with expert faculty.  
• Leadership Options: In our smaller program, you can grow as a student leader through a conducting practicum, student organizations, performing with local ensemble, and involvement in community events.      
• Music Electives and other majors/minors: General Music students have room to pursue their particular areas of interest through music electives and many choose to add a minor or second major in a different discipline,  
• Exploring Careers in Music: Develop your marketing portfolio while interacting with professionals in many fields of music and arts administration through our clinics and Exploring Careers in Music class.  

Outside the Classroom, In the Community

You will have numerous opportunities to engage with the broader musical community —collaborating with musicians in local ensembles and venues, performing on stages across the country, and attending or presenting at regional and national student music conferences. These immersive experiences are designed to sharpen your talents, expand your professional network, and open doors for your career. 

VTSU Castleton has a number of campus groups you can join, including University Chorale, Chamber Singers, String Orchestra, Wind Symphony, Woodwind Doubling Ensemble, Vocal Unrest (a cappella ensemble), Jazz Ensemble, and Spartan Spirit Band.
