Beginning in 2024, Vermont State University (VTSU) has leased management of the apple orchard to nearby Liberty Orchard. This partnership allows for the university orchard to continue to be a campus resource that supports hands-on agricultural and horticultural training, classes, and events, and, that serves valuable community functions (including providing apple donations to area food banks and hosting school events). Liberty Orchard is co-managed by a graduate of Vermont State Randolph, and uses Integrated Pest Management Strategies (IPM), as they’ve done for 30 years in their own orchard. This holistic management strategy allows for a significant reduction in pesticide usage, ultimately improving the overall health of the trees and the long-term quality of apples at the VTSU orchard.
Due to low apple yield, the VTSU orchard will not be open to the public for the 2024 season. We recognize that this is disappointing for many, however, you can find the few apples of quality are bagged and for sale at Liberty Orchard (2408 West Street, Brookfield, VT 05036). They are open for pick-your-own starting on 9/20, have many different varieties to try, and are family-friendly. Liberty Orchard will honor the University faculty, staff, and student discounted price of $12 a half bushel and $8 a peck.
