Courses will be available in various formats depending on each participant’s Plan of Study. Lyndon is the home campus, though courses may be selected on any campus and online, through a mix of synchronous and asynchronous offerings.

Through a tailored plan of study developed in consultation with your academic advisor, you’ll build in-depth knowledge and understanding of your topic of study over time.

Learn along with peers in group interdisciplinary seminars. Gain hands-on skills and experience in field-based learning. Concentration Areas

The M.A. in Liberal Studies is offered in a flexible format to meet the needs and goals of adult learners. Your topic of study (concentration) will fit within one of three broad theme areas: 

  • Integrated Professional Practice 
  • Interdisciplinary Content Area 
  • Contemporary Issue of Interest  

Examples of topics of study include international studies, rural studies, cultural studies, gerontology, equity and social ethics, technical communication, and program assessment and evaluation. Additional examples can be found in the Catalog.

Personalized concentrations can be completed through online coursework. However, if you live near a VTSU campus, you may be able to include some in-person courses in your plan of study if you wish. 

In addition to a personalized concentration, this program also currently offers a concentration in Advanced Teaching and Learning of Mathematics through a partnership between VTSU and the Vermont Mathematics Initiative (VMI); enrollment is open now.

This program may include some in-person courses offered on campus or at an off-campus site, some blended courses with in-person or remote participation, and some online courses.


What is an In-Person Plus program?

Program-required courses are taught through a combination of in-person and remote delivery. Remote learning may require meeting at a specific time or may not have a specific class time; all weekly interactions and assignments for remote courses are completed through a learning site.

Through Vermont State’s Master of Arts in Counseling program, you’ll gain experience with the theory and practice of professional counseling for clinical mental health counseling or school counseling settings. Upon graduation, you’ll be proficient in the knowledge and skills of the counseling profession, as well as in person-centered and strength-based approaches.

You will learn how to lead a culturally fluid practice in a diverse society and drive leadership, systems change, and advocacy within the professional community and the larger world. Our flexible program lets you focus on an area of interest to tailor your studies to your career goals and is designed to be highly accessible to working adults, including those currently in the field.

Why Study Counseling at Vermont State?

  • Unique Program: Our curriculum includes a core of required courses, additional specialization coursework in your area of interest, a personal growth experience, and an internship with an accompanying seminar.  
  • Self-Paced Learning: It usually takes 2.5 to 3.5 years to finish the degree, depending on your individualized plan of study. Hybrid and evening courses are available, and a thesis is not required.   
  • Expert Faculty: Faculty are scholar-practitioners who bring national and local expertise in mental health counseling, school counseling, integrated service delivery, research, and administration to the program.
