Academic Support

At Vermont State University, we provide the individualized academic support you need to succeed. Your advisors and instructors are here to guide you, and we also offer support in areas where you need a little extra help – from tutoring and skills development to help with time management and becoming a better test-taker. Additional opportunities are available through our TRIO Student Support Services and McNair Scholars Program for students who are the first in their family to attend college, are dependent upon financial aid to pay for college, and/or are from an underserved background.

Summer Bridge Program

Are you the first in your family to attend college, dependent upon financial aid to pay for college, or have a disability? Consider applying for the Summer Bridge program offered at our Castleton, Johnson, and Lyndon campuses. With Summer Bridge you’ll arrive on campus early with other new students, joining with upper-class student mentors to learn all about campus life. Workshops, projects, and experiential activities will explore a range of topics, including study strategies, time management, writing research papers, and paying for college.

At Vermont State University, we’re proud of our TRIO connection. Funded by the US Department of Education, TRIO Student Support Services make sure all motivated students, regardless of their income or background, can succeed in college.

  • You are a first-generation college student. (Neither of your parents has a four-year college degree.)
  • You meet certain income guidelines.
  • You have a documented disability.

Like all of our services, SSS TRIO services are free for our students.

Vermont State offers multilingual students the resources to be successful academically and adjust to a new language and culture. Academic support resources include help with academic English reading, writing, listening, speaking, pronunciation, and cultural literacy, and services are available both in-person and remotely.

Students can also receive individual tutoring support or take courses designed specifically for multilingual students.

We actively work to break down barriers, promote equity, and celebrate diverse perspectives to empower every individual’s academic journey.

Through ongoing assessment and action, we integrate these principles into every aspect of our academic support system.
