Understanding Undergraduate Cost of Attendance
To understand your Cost of Attendance, you’ll first need to understand the cost of tuition and then understand the costs beyond tuition – all figures are listed above. These add up to equal your Cost of Attendance.
The university defines Cost of Attendance (COA) as the cost charged by the college (Direct Costs) and the estimated costs a student may incur during the academic year (called Indirect Costs). The COA is calculated before any financial aid is applied.
- Direct Costs include general tuition, program-specific additional tuition if applicable to your program, on-campus housing and food if you choose to live on campus, and standard institutional fees for all students.
- Indirect Costs include personal expenses, transportation expenses, books and supplies, and an average dollar amount for direct loan fees. They also include living expenses for students who choose to live off campus and/or with a parent. Each student’s indirect costs may vary.
About Your Financial Aid
The Office of Financial aid uses a budget based on Cost of Attendance, a total of direct and indirect costs at Vermont State University based on residency and housing. It is not tailored to individual living expenses or choices. You can receive financial aid (loans, grants, scholarships, work study, etc.) up to the full cost of attendance. Learn more about Financial Aid and Scholarships at Vermont State.
If you complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), you’ll receive notice of your financial aid eligibility from VTSU. See How to Read your Financial Aid Award Letter for step-by-step guidance through your letter.
