Why Study School Health at Vermont State
Deep Field Experience: You’ll graduate with lots of classroom experience, including 80 hours of fieldwork and a full semester of student teaching.
Mentorship: You’ll work under the guidance of an experienced Health Education teacher, as well as your Vermont State faculty advisor, so you have support and mentorship as you prepare to run your own classroom.
Personal Educational Philosophy: Discover what your style of teaching is while you observe physical education and/or health education classrooms. You’ll examine current educational trends and programs. You’ll also study professionalism, school laws, equitable learning, school problems, and basic teaching strategies, while you develop your personal educational philosophy.
Preparation for Licensure: You’ll graduate prepared to earn your Vermont Agency of Education Level I Teacher Licensure in PreK-12 Health Education — from the only Health Education Teacher Education (HETE) licensure program in the state.
What You’ll Learn
In this concentration, you’ll get experience working in local schools and acquire the ability to:
Organize, develop, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive Pre-K through grade 12 curriculum in health education that includes the following Vermont health core concept areas: alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs; family, social, and sexual health; mental and emotional health; nutrition and physical activity; personal health and wellness; and violence and injury prevention.
Create and implement an assessment plan consistent with national and state standards.
Develop accommodations for a health education program to meet the needs of all individuals, including students with special needs. This includes an understanding of applicable laws, policies, and procedures.
You’ll complete a minimum of 80 hours of field experience at local schools prior to student teaching.
Then, you’ll complete a full semester of student teaching. During student teaching, you’ll teach under the guidance of a qualified cooperating teacher and university supervisor.
Students seeking teacher licensure in K-12 Health Education must apply, qualify, and be admitted to student teaching.
Teaching Certification & Licensure
If you decide to seek Health Education PreK-12 licensure, you will develop a portfolio throughout your undergraduate experience demonstrating individual learning and growth as well as the ways in which the individual course work and field experiences foster proficiency in meeting the Vermont standards for teacher preparation. Integral field experiences ensure that you become part of a collaborative relationship in a school setting. Field experiences become more complex as you advance in the program, culminating in a semester-long student teaching experience. A minimum of 80 scheduled hours of field experience and a successful application is required prior to student teaching.

Why Study Community Health at Vermont State
Career Flexibility: You’ll graduate prepared to work in a wide variety of non-school health settings, such as community health organizations, public health departments, hospitals, work site health promotion, and non-profit community agencies.
Exam Preparation: This program prepares students to take the Community Health Education Specialist (CHES) exam.
What You’ll Learn
In addition to the courses required for all Health Promotion majors, you’ll also take courses specific to the Community Health Concentration. You’ll learn to assess the needs of a community and then develop programming that meets the community’s needs. You’ll also learn how to advocate for healthier communities and promote health and physical activity among the people you help.
In your capstone experience for this concentration, you’ll complete an internship for college credit.
Certifications
The field of health promotion has established a national credentialing certificate called the Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES). It is a voluntary credentialing process that is generally not required as a condition of employment. However, we recommend that Community Health Concentration students obtain certification, as the CHES certificate conveys additional standards of accomplishment that may contribute to your prospects for employment. For further information about the CHES process, visit the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc. website.

Why Study Secondary Education at Vermont State?
The Secondary Education Concentration in the Mathematics program allows you to pursue a Mathematics Secondary Education degree and gain your teaching license in mathematics for the middle and high school levels. You’ll get the student teaching experience you need to feel confident in the classroom, as well as a firm foundation in ways to teach math to different learners. Your elective requirements include one course in computer programming as well as courses on teaching math. Mathematics teachers play a critical role in our society, so completing this program will put you in great demand in the job market.
Teaching Experience: You will prepare lesson plans and acquire teaching experience by taking part in individual tutoring, classroom observation, and lesson presentation.
Opportunity: The Secondary Education Concentration prepares you for a career as a middle school or high school math teacher. You will also be well-prepared to enter the corporate professional environment or a graduate program at the master’s or doctoral level.
Individual Attention: Our small class sizes will provide you with an individualized learning experience and allow you to conduct teaching projects, research projects, and internships under the guidance of our experienced faculty.
Student Teaching Placement: We will place you with a community teacher leader for student teaching, where you will gain hands-on, in-classroom experience.
What You’ll Learn
You’ll learn to instill passion and excellence in young adult math students, while you build your own expertise in the subject of mathematics.
Prepare unit and lesson plans on a variety of topics and gain teaching experience by tutoring, observing, and teaching in local schools.
Learn about the history of math, including ancient number systems, major discoveries in mathematics, and the contributions of women and people of color to the field. You will research famous mathematicians and present your findings as a written report and oral presentation.
Your senior project will give you the opportunity to demonstrate the mathematical maturity you have attained from your work in the field. Your project will culminate in a presentation to members of the mathematics faculty and other interested parties.
You’ll also learn to use advanced math to solve problems in the real world. You’ll be able to:
Use the definite integral (and limits of sums) to solve real-world problems.
Model a variety of real-world situations with an appropriate differential equation.

Why Study Music & Self-Promotion at Vermont State?
Three Areas of Study: Gain the skills to develop your sound and your business through coursework and practical experiences in music, music industry, and business.
MBI Recording Studio: Open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, it’s the perfect space to capture your musical ideas.
Combine Concentrations: MBI students often combine concentrations in their degree program to develop skills for multiple sides of this field, adding Audio Production or Music Management to their Music & Self-Promotion Concentration.
What You’ll Learn
From marketing and artist management to music theory and basic songwriting, your courses will cover the multi-faceted skills you’ll need to build your musical skills and promote yourself. You can choose to learn the ins and outs of how a recording company runs in the two-course Record Label Practicum — which leads to the production and marketing of a 3-song EP on the MBI student label Eneekay — or focus on expanding your musical performance capabilities through a combination of performance-based courses.
Autumn successfully pitched herself as the artist for the student-run Eneekay record label, gaining a three-song EP and class support to create the program’s first storyline music video as part of the marketing approach. Heading for LA soon, she says, “I’d love to do anything within the song-writing community, I just super enjoy the process. But to perform my own songs would be the icing on the cake!”
This program is eligible for international students requiring an F-1 visa.
What is an In-Person Plus program?
Program-required courses are taught through a combination of in-person and remote delivery. Remote learning may require meeting at a specific time or may not have a specific class time; all weekly interactions and assignments for remote courses are completed through a learning site.
The Music Management Concentration within the Music Business & Industry bachelor’s program at Vermont State University gives you the training and instruction in artist management, music marketing and distribution, music publishing, and event and venue management. You will explore the concepts and skills needed for mastery of all the practical, legal, financial, and marketing aspects of music management. The program provides the expertise and hands-on experience that is necessary for building careers in concert booking and promotion, artist management, music marketing, music publishing, and more.

Why Study Music Management at Vermont State
Real-World Experience: Work on campus-based music events, create and market commercial music for the student-run record label Eneekay Records, and interact with working professionals through internships and courses for a competitive edge.
What You’ll Learn
In the Music Management Concentration, you’ll add a focus on the management side of the industry to your core MBI courses, gaining a solid foundation in accounting, business software and spreadsheets along with an understanding of event and venue management and promotion. Gain direct experience using what you’re learning through being part of the two-course Record Label Practicum and work as part of the Eneekay Records team to produce and promote a 3-song EP, or help manage the program’s annual Gregg Fest music festival each spring on campus. You’ll graduate ready to collaborate with other industry professionals with solid foundational skills and experience to adapt and flourish in the dynamic music business.
“If you’re willing to put in the work, the MBI program is one of the most rewarding experiences you can have. The culture in the program is indicative of the culture in the industry, and a lot of people here have the right attitude — they really care about what they’re doing and what they’re part of.”
Develop your studio and live sound skills in the Audio Production Concentration within the Music Business & Industry (MBI) major at Vermont State — the program for students interested in music production, audio engineering, music mixing, live sound, and audio post-production for film, television, streaming, and video games.
Your hands-on education begins year one in the MBI recording studio and Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) Lab, and you’ll learn live sound reinforcement working events in the Alexander Twilight Theatre right on campus.

Why Study Teaching PreK-12 Physical Education at Vermont State
Hands-On Day-One: In the Teaching PreK-12 Physical Education Concentration, you will practice what you learn from the start, working with students in local schools across age groups. You’ll accrue at least 80 hours of field experience even before your student teaching begins!
Networking Opportunities: You’ll have chances to work directly with special populations of students, coach youth sports and activity programs, and network with the program’s alumni at state and regional conferences. These experiences will allow you to gain the skills and knowledge needed to become a successful educator.
Strong Reputation: A physical education teaching degree from Vermont State opens doors. The Physical Education program has a long history of preparing graduates to deliver quality physical education in Vermont schools. Employers are aware of the program’s enduring reputation for producing exceptional health and physical education teachers.
What You’ll Learn
The Physical Education major includes an exciting curriculum that blends educational theory, exercise science, human anatomy, and sports-specific teacher training. You can learn to teach swimming, dance, individual sports, racquet sports, wellness, and more. You will apply for admittance into the Teaching PreK-12 Physical Education Concentration at the end of your second academic year. Learn more about the requirements for admission into the Physical Education student teaching practicum in the catalog.
The Physical Education student teaching experience is a 15-week practicum and capstone practical experience for this concentration. All students will complete placements in both elementary and secondary classrooms, which may be completed as 15 continuous weeks in a dual elementary-secondary school or as an experience encompassing 8 weeks of student teaching in an elementary school followed by 7 weeks of teaching in a secondary school. We will prepare you for the student teaching experience, support you during it, and review your competencies to ensure you’re on track.
Upon completing your student teaching experience, you should be able to demonstrate the beginning teacher competencies and standards identified in the Vermont Endorsement Competencies for Physical Education or Health Education and the Level I Teaching Licensure Portfolio. Candidates intending to gain licensure beyond the state of Vermont will identify requirements specific to the state they intend to teach in.
Double-Majoring in Health Education
Many students decide to pursue a dual endorsement in teaching both school health and physical education. For more information, visit the catalog or speak with the program coordinator.
